Dems Impose Hiring/Wage Freeze
HARRISBURG, February 9, 2009 – As a result of the national recession that has led to faltering state revenues and a gaping $2.3 billion budget deficit, state Senate Democratic Caucus leaders today said they will impose a caucus-wide hiring and wage freeze.
“While we recognize that these actions will not have a major impact on the state budget picture this year, it is important that we continue to cut costs while seeking additional ways to curtail spending at this very difficult time,” said Senate Democratic Leader Robert J. Mellow.
The wage freeze will apply to all caucus employees. With the exception of replacing critical staff positions, no new full-time caucus employees will be hired.
The freezes will remain in effect until this year’s budget issues are resolved and the state regains financial footing.
Since January of 2007, the number of caucus employees has dropped by 50, or 13 percent.
Members of Democratic Caucus leadership who joined Mellow for in today’s announcement include senators: Jay Costa (D-Allegheny), Vincent Hughes (D-Phila./Montgomery), Sean Logan (D-Allegheny/Westmoreland), Mike O’Pake (D-Berks), Richard Kasunic (D-Fayette/Somerset), Mike Stack (D-Phila.) and Tina Tartaglione (D-Phila.).
