Teri Rhodes Free on Bond

An Erie County Judge has released a former Mercyhurst College student from jail while she appeals the sentence she received for killing her newborn daughter in August of 2007.

Teri Rhodes is now free on $25,000 bond. Judge William Cunningham sentenced Rhodes to nine to 18 years in prison in November, and today said the bond is appropriate because he doesn't consider her a flight risk. The 20-year-old from Michigan had been out on bond before her sentencing.

Rhodes pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter. Her defense lawyer has criticized the sentence as too severe given the guilty plea. Cunningham has been equally adamant that the sentence is fair.
