67 Women, 67 Counties

Charles Cole Memorial Hospital, breast cancer survivors, families, and the community welcomed the photo exhibit, “67 Women, 67 Counties: Facing Breast Cancer in Pennsylvania” Thursday during an opening reception in the Irwin Medical Arts Center. The exhibit is open to the community free of charge through March 23.

Music for the reception was provided by harpist and breast cancer survivor Mary Schroyer. Remarks were delivered by Cindi Hardesty, vice president and chief nurse executive, CCMH; Sandy Cray, vice president, Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition board of directors; Hilary Gordnier, CCMH junior volunteer and granddaughter of breast cancer survivor and CCMH volunteer Kitty Gordnier; and Twila Alden, breast cancer survivor.

Local women featured in the traveling display include Twila Alden, Cameron County; Audrey Beckes, McKean County; Mary Shon, Potter County; and Dee Hoffman, Barb Bailey, and Laurie Seip, Tioga County. Additionally, CCMH is featuring the following area women in the display: Kathleen Sallade, Lorrie Jandrew, and Kendra Mehl of Potter County; Dorothy Logue, Mary Maxine Weis, and Mary Schroyer of Cameron County; Linda Wismer of Tioga County; and Carol Daniels, Lynn Petzold, and Sharon Hodgdon of McKean County.

Sponsored by the Pennsylvania Department of Health, Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition, and the Potter County Exhibit Committee, the traveling photo exhibit celebrates the life, courage, hope and dignity of women and families who have battled breast cancer and features women from each of the counties in the state including those from CCMH’s surrounding communities.

The display also encourages women to learn about early detection through yearly mammograms, monthly breast self exams, and annual clinical exams. The components to the exhibit are education, empowerment, and motivation.

Over 90 communities throughout Pennsylvania have hosted the exhibit since 1994. For more information, visit www.pabreastcancer.org.
