Fishing Essay Contest Starts Tues.

Mayville — The Chautauqua County Sports Fishery Advisory Board is again sponsoring the Annual Spring Fishing Essay Contest for Chautauqua County, now in its 17th year. The contest is for elementary and middle school students in grades 3 through 6. Students may attend public or private schools, or be homeschooled.

"We received over 400 entries for the 2008 essay contest, which indicates a real interest in fishing and lake ecology in Chautauqua County," said Board Chairman Zen Olow.

County Executive Gregory J. Edwards states, "My family and I have enjoyed fishing for years. It is an important recreational activity within our region. I am excited to see the Spring Fishing Essay Contest still going strong, and I encourage all schools to participate in this educational program."

The topic of this year's contest will be; "Fishing sounds like fun, who would I like to take fishing with me and why?" The contest will officially open on March 3, 2009 and all entries are to be submitted to the following address by March 26, 2009 to:

Chautauqua County Sports Fishery Advisory Board
Office of the County Executive
Gerace Office Building
3 North Erie Street
Mayville, New York 14757

Essays should be no more than 250 words in length and must include the student's name, school, grade, and teacher's name. Entries are judged by grade level with each grade level normally having 2 winners. Additional prizes (up to 5 total per class including special education children) will be awarded for uniqueness regardless of class, and each teacher will be recognized for his/her support of the project. These prizes will be awarded for the essays that are identified by the instructor. This year County Executive Edwards will be joined by other members of the Fish Board visiting each class that participates in this contest. Students who do not "win a prize" will receive a certificate of Honorable Mention for the interest and effort. Prizes will be awarded at the monthly County Legislature meeting in Mayville on May 27, 2009.
