Seneca Leaders Planning School

Seneca Nation leaders plan to start their own independent school in the fall of 2010, but some public school administrators and Seneca families are worried about the plan.

The school would be called the Seneca Academy and would have campuses on the Allegany and Cattaraugus territories.

Seneca leaders say they're starting the school because their children aren’t learning enough about Seneca traditions, culture, language and history in the public schools.

Public school administrators are concerned that losing Seneca students would also mean losing millions of dollars in government funding, and could lead to layoffs in public schools.

Some Seneca families are worried that sending their children to a Seneca school would separate them from the outside world.
