Gabler Against Gas Tax Bill

HARRISBURG - In a vote that went predominately along party lines, the House Environmental Resources and Energy Committee passed a bill that would tax the extraction of natural gas from Pennsylvania's Marcellus Shale deposits. State Rep. Matt Gabler (R-Clearfield/Elk) was among House Republicans to continue their no-tax, pro-jobs stance and vote against the legislation, which passed 15-11.

"I pledged to fight efforts to increase job-killing taxes, so this was an easy vote," Gabler said. "My House Republican colleagues and I view the Marcellus Shale development as an opportunity to create jobs in a difficult economic environment. Governor Ed Rendell and House Democrats look at the formation as another means to reach further into our pockets as they continue their efforts to atone for years of irresponsible spending.

"Pennsylvania's current climate is among the nation's worst, when it comes to encouraging and stimulating business growth. This severance tax on natural gas will be a deterrent to companies considering launching businesses here and investing in our state.

"This administration continues to view taxation as a first option in closing the spending gap," Gabler added. "We must be about the business of encouraging, not discouraging, industry if we are going to get this economy going in the right direction."

The bill will now be considered by the full House.
