Clarendon Fire Update

Fire departments from at least 6 counties have been battling a blaze at Berenfield Container in Clarendon since about 10 o'clock this morning.

Witnesses tell us there were several explosions. The roof of the building has collapsed. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries, but no other injuries have been reported. Several firefighters have been treated for heat exhaustion, however.

People living close to the Erie Street plant have been evacuated as a precaution.

Berenfield makes metal shipping drums and fiber drums. There is also a paint shop at the Clarendon location.

Route 6 is closed in both directions from Route 59 in Mead Township to Route 666 in Sheffield Township.

PennDOT expects both lanes of Route 6 to reopen at around 6 p.m., and will issue a news release when both lanes are officially open.

Responding fire companies came from Warren, McKean, Clarion, Forest and Crawford counties in Pennsylvania and Chautauqua County in New York.
