Evans Urging Hunters to Apply for Doe License Immediately

McKean County Treasurer Nancy Evans is concerned that many McKean County hunters are not aware of the new doe license issuance procedures and that by the time they apply for their doe license McKean County’s units will be all sold out. For years, the first day to apply for a doe license was the first Monday in August. This year, for the first time, doe licenses went on sale to the general public beginning on July 13.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission has divided Pennsylvania into 22 Wildlife Management Units. In the past, county treasurers could issue doe licenses only for WMUs located in their county. Hunters were required to mail their applications to the PGC in Harrisburg and had to specify one WMU where they wanted to hunt for their doe. The PGC would then distribute the applications to the various county treasurers where the WMUs were located for processing. This year, hunters apply directly to any county treasurer of their choice. Also new this year, every county treasurer in the state can issue a doe license for any WMU in the state. For example, a hunter who lives in Harrisburg can apply directly to his Dauphin County treasurer for a doe license to hunt in one of McKean County’s WMUs.

McKean County includes portions of three WMUs. They are 2F, 2G, and 3A. Of these, 2F and 2G have always been the first two in the state to sell out. During today alone, statewide, there were 1,990 licenses sold for 2F; 2,145 sold for 2G and 1,128 sold for 3A. Today the McKean County treasurer’s office received a mere 126 applications for all three WMUs combined.

Evans is urging local hunters who want to hunt for their doe in McKean County to apply for their doe license immediately. Applications can only be accepted by mail to the county treasurer’s office and must be sent first class in the pink envelope provided to hunters with the purchase of their general hunting license. Anyone with any questions can call Evans at 887-3220.
