Paterson Statement on McCourt

“Frank McCourt lived a life of determination and grace that was an inspiration to millions across the world. Angela’s Ashes and his subsequent body of work resonated in the hearts of human beings from all walks of life.

“Frank established his legacy well before he published his first book at age 66. Over the course of a 33-year teaching career, he affected the lives of thousands of New York City high school students. Before the critics had ever read a word, his stories had been acclaimed by generations of young New Yorkers. He was a true representation of the transformative power of teaching. And his life is a tribute to all of the teachers who have touched us, but may never be recognized beyond a simple ‘thank you.’

“With the passing of Frank McCourt, New York has lost one of its most beloved, most talented and most respected citizens. I extend my thoughts and prayers to his brother, Malachy, and to his family.”
