Cattagaugus Sheriff Dennis John is dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
John's body was found on Sunfish Run Road in the Town of Cold Spring.
A state police news release says the cause of death appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound and no foul play appears to be involved.
John was appointed by Governor George Pataki in 2005 and was New York's first Native American sheriff.
