Storm Update

One man is dead, thousands of people are without power and many roads in the region are still closed after thunderstorms with heavy rain and high winds ripped through the Twin Tiers yesterday and today.

Some areas of Bradford and Port Allegany in McKean County, Warren, Clarendon and Tidioute in Warren County and Galeton, Ulysses and Westfield in Potter County are still without power according to First Energy.

More than 5,800 National Grid customers in Cattaraugus County are still without power and it may not be restored in some areas until Tuesday night. Several thousand more NYSEG customers are also without power and there's no word on when that may be restored.

In Chautauqua County, the water destroyed all 10 homes in a Silver Creek trailer park. No one was hurt. The Silver Creek fire station was also heavily damaged.

At Sunset Bay, boats were swept into the lake and crashed into rocks.

An 80-year-old Cattaraugus County man is dead after being swept away by floodwaters in Gowanda.

Theodore Stitzel's body was recovered at 3:30 this morning. Sheriff's deputies say he went out to check a bridge that goes to his barn and got caught up in the 3-foot flood waters that swept him into a bridge abutment.

All roads into Gowanda are closed because of flooding from the heavy rain that fell in the area on Sunday. Police dispatchers are not sure how many people were evacuated or how long they will be kept away from their homes.

All programs and services at Tri-County Hospital in Gowanda are cancelled until further notice because the hospital is flooded and has no power or phone service. 45 patients were moved to a hospital in Irving.

A rock and mud and rock slide has closed Route 62 north in Warren County from Pine Grove Township to the New York State line.

PennDOT expects the northbound lane to reopen at around 7 o'clock tonight. The southbound lane is open.

Elswewhere in Warren County, Cable Hollow is closed from Akely Road in Pine Grove Township to Scandia Road in Elk Township due to flooding and debris on the road. It's expected to re-open at 1:30.

Route 957 is cosed from Pleasant Street in Sugar Grove to Millers Hill Road in Farmington Township. It's expected to reopen at 2 p.m.

Six campers had to be rescued by helicopter from Zoar Valley this morning.

The campers were clinging to keep from being swept away by floodwaters of the Cattaraugus Creek. An Erie County Sheriff's Department helicopter pulled them out of the valley at around 6:30 this morning.

The victims were treated for hypothermia, but didn't suffer any injuries.

Two dogs were also rescued.
