UPB One of America's Best of 2010

The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford was ranked among the top 50 baccalaureate colleges in the northeast, according to U.S.News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges 2010.”

“This is more good and exciting news for our campus,” said Dr. Livingston Alexander, president. “The recognition in ‘America’s Best Colleges 2010’ is indicative of the widespread respect we’re gaining among our peer institutions and the improvements we’ve made in our overall quality.”

The North region defined by U.S.News includes Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.

Baccalaureate colleges were those that awarded fewer than 50 percent of their degrees in liberal arts disciplines, and the remainder of their degrees in such professional disciplines as business, criminal justice, education and nursing.

James Baldwin, assistant dean of academic affairs and director of enrollment services, said, “Pitt-Bradford’s inclusion among the top 50 baccalaureate colleges in the North is indicative of the hard work and efforts made by all of our faculty and staff members with the purpose of helping students succeed.”

U.S.News gathered data on as many as 15 indicators of academic excellence from each institution, including such indicators as percentage of classes with fewer than 20 students, percentage of faculty who are full time and the percentage of freshmen who were ranked in the top 25 percent of their high school class.

U.S.News also asks college and university presidents, academic deans and directors of admissions to rate their peer institutions, and a peer assessment score is created.

Figures noted for Pitt-Bradford in the report included more than half of classes having 20 or fewer students; 73 percent of faculty being full time; 31 percent of freshman ranking in the top 25 percent of their high school class; and a 62 percent acceptance rate.
