UWBA Going 'Back to Basics'

The United Way of the Bradford Area’s 2009 appeal has officially begun, and the community will find that the organization is going “Back To Basics” in their efforts this year.

“We are going to incorporate some ideas of past campaigns,” says Executive Director Kelly Case, “specifically the Speakers Bureau.

“We also have in our marketing plans the display of our building blocks, which will have the same affect as the window paintings that were done in years’ prior.”

Assistant Director Mandi Davis adds, “Obviously we’re going to put our own spin on these plans, making them specific to this campaign, but we are looking forward to working off of those successes.”

The campaign goal has been set at $325,000, a decision that took much research and discussion.

“We spent quite a bit of time analyzing the past several years, and feel comfortable with the amount that was decided upon,” says Case. “We are striving to surpass that monetary figure, but it’s nice for the community and the agencies to have an amount to track.”

Pat Ryan, Futures Rehabilitation Center’s Director of Operations and Co-Chair of the 2009 United Way appeal, says “Back to Basics is a fitting theme, as the United Way is so vital in addressing the basic needs of the community. Despite the difficult economic times, I’m confident that the local community will offer its support, as it has year after year.”

The local staff and volunteers will spend the next few months soliciting the community, especially via the workplace campaign presentations. The community will this year see various volunteers and agency recipients, as the Speakers Bureau will be enlisted to assist with the solicitation process. The group comprising the Bureau is scheduled for a training session next week.

"I am so pleased to be able to represent the United Way not only as a representative of CARE for Children but also as a donor,” says Tina Martin. “I see first-hand the positive impact made by United Way funding and believe that all the agencies are made stronger by uniting behind the United Way banner."

The close of the appeal will be December 15, and the staff and volunteers are planning to work diligently to finalize all processes by the end of January.

“We want to be able to close the campaign as close to the December 15 date as possible,” says Davis. “Our donors expect to hear figures as soon as they’re available, and, the agencies rely on having that information so as to schedule their year and various activities.”

In other United Way news, reservations are currently being accepted for the annual Pig Roast/Clam Bake, scheduled for September 10 at the West Branch Community Center. Volunteers will also be out and about at various functions in the coming months selling the cookbook, “From Our Events To Yours”, as well as the Christmas cards which were designed by the Life Skills classes at GGB and School Street Elementary.
