Forest Hosting Summer 2010 Archaeological Program for Educators

Warren, Pa. – Area teachers are invited to participate in the 2010 Archaeological Program for Teachers on the Allegheny National Forest (NF). The program will run from June 21 through July 2, 2010.

This free 2-week program will include workshops with professors from Clarion University of Pennsylvania (CUP) and other professionals in the natural and cultural resource fields. Participants will also spend one week conducting archaeological work in the Allegheny NF with Dr. Susan Prezzano, an anthropology professor with over 30 years of experience in the archaeology of New York and Pennsylvania.

Ten to twelve teachers will be chosen to participate in the program at NO COST, due to a grant from the Stackpole-Hall Foundation. Teachers from Elk County and the Allegheny NF area are encouraged to participate; teachers of any grade level are eligible.

These teachers will attend workshops at Clarion University during the week of June 21. Workshops may include: a study of historic cemeteries, a field trip to the Seneca Iroquois National Museum on the Salamanca Reservation in New York, a hands-on curation project with artwork by world-famous artists, and visits to archaeological and historic sites on the Allegheny NF.

During the week of June 29th, participants will spend time working with professional archaeologists on an archaeological survey (testing) and mapping project within the forest.

Campus housing and meals will be provided for the duration of the project if participants choose to utilize them.

The project is expected to be approved for ACT 48 credits.

Interested teachers should contact the project directors by May 15 to indicate interest and reserve a slot in the program. More information can be obtained from Allegheny National Forest Marienville District Archaeologist Amanda Glaz at 814-927-5756 or aglaz@fs.fed.us; and from Dr. Susan Prezzano, Professor of Anthropology at Clarion University of Pennsylvania, at 814-393-2396.
