Pirates to Celebrate Earth Day at PNC Park

The Pittsburgh Pirates will celebrate Earth Day on Thursday, April 22, when the team takes on the Milwaukee Brewers at 12:35 p.m. In conjunction with their "Let's Go Bucs. Let's Go Green." campaign, the Pirates will host several events throughout the day to highlight resource conservation, integration of greening initiatives and the promotion of green practices throughout the Pittsburgh community.

The team's Earth Day events will begin at 10:00 a.m. as a team of approximately 30 volunteers from the Pirates, including the Pirate Parrot, and "Citizens Against Litter" will meet on Federal Street to pick up litter on the North Shore.

The Pirates will have more than 30 environmentally-friendly local organizations on Federal Street before the game to discuss with fans the programs and initiatives they have implemented to help protect the environment.

PNC Park will use 100% renewable energy on Earth Day as every dollar spent on electricity at the ballpark will be matched with a dollar spent on renewable energy resource development, neutralizing the Pirates carbon footprint.

In a special pregame ceremony, the Pirates will honor several local environmental organizations by honoring their group leaders on the field.

As special offers for Earth Day, all fans entering the park will receive a special "green" Pirates cap made out of recycled plastic bottles, and fans can also stop by the Pennsylvania Game Commission's booth on Federal Street and pick up a tree seedling after the game concludes.

The Pirates' "Let's Go Bucs, Let's Go Green" campaign began in 2008 and has produced dramatic results in just two years. For example, in the last two seasons, the Pirates and their PNC Park partners have succeeded in recycling:

Nine tons of aluminum
67.8 tons of paper
2.6 tons of glass
130.7 tons of food waste
50 tons of plastic
41.7 tons of yard waste
80 tons of used cooking oil
277 tons of cardboard

In addition to improving their recycling rates even further, the Pirates in 2010 are implementing two new impactful greening initiatives. The Club will install a dry cooler heat recovery system to aid in the conservation of water at PNC Park. Instead of utilizing chilled water and the city water systems as a heat rejection source, the new cooler will employ a closed loop system that circulates glycol, a heat transfer fluid. The new system will save on more than three million gallons of water per year. The Club will also replace the lighting fixtures throughout PNC Park and the Club's administrative offices with energy efficient fixtures that will reduce significantly the electricity that the Club uses on a daily basis.
