'Walk Through McKean County' to Start

Community in Action, a new program created to increase the activity of the citizens of the area, will hold its inaugural event, “Walk Through McKean County,” this summer.

“I am very excited about the initiation of this program in our community, since physical activity is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to be healthy,” said Dr. Youmasu J. Siewe, director of the Pitt-Bradford Center for Rural Health Practice. “Benefits of being physically active include improved mood; preventing heart disease, type-2 diabetes and some forms of cancer; weight reduction; improved sleep; increased bone and muscle strength; increased energy level; and increased chance to live longer.”

“Walk Through McKean County” will begin with a kick-off event at 9 a.m. April 24 at the Sport and Fitness Center parking lot at Pitt-Bradford. The first 50 participants to sign up will receive a walking radio and T-shirt.

Participants can walk as individuals or as a team, in their own neighborhoods or on trails and submit the steps and miles walked to the Center for Rural Health Practice, the organizer of the CIA program.

The program will run through the end of August, and prizes will be offered. The Center for Rural Health Practice will provide participants with pedometers and log sheets. Those who cannot attend the kickoff program can sign up at any time.

Other partners in the program are members of the Community Health Partnership, which includes representatives of retail businesses, public schools, industry, banking, media and health care.
