Flutist Tiedemann to Perform at UPB

Accomplished flutist Sarah Tiedemann, accompanied by pianist Ritsuko Wada of Olean, N.Y., will perform as part of the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford’s Spectrum music series on Oct. 21.

The performance will take place at 7 p.m. in the Bromeley Family Theater in Blaisdell Hall. The performance is free.

Tiedmann has prepared a program inspired by dance, including Ian Clarke’s raucous “Zoom Tube,” Ástor Piazzollo’s “Tango Etudes,” Bla Bartók’s “Suite Paysanne Hongroise” and shorter works by Arthur Honegger, Camille Saint-Saens, Maurice Ravel and François Borne.

“I’m intrigued by the repertoire Sarah has chosen,” said Dr. John Levey, assistant professor of music. “It’s diverse, but there are a lot of fun, flashy pieces. I think the dance concept will really come across.”

Tiedemann has made a unique and diverse career as a performing artist. Currently, she serves as principal flute of the Salem Chamber of Orchestra, the Portland Festival Symphony and Second Flute in the Portland Columbia Symphony.

She has also played with the Oregon Symphony, Portland Opera, Vancouver Symphony, and Portland Chamber Orchestra as well as throughout the United States and Europe with the Swedish Radio Symphony, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, Norrkoping Symphony and Boston Philharmonic.

Tiedemann holds degrees from Oberlin Conservatory of Music, New England Conservatory of Music and the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, Sweden. She is a member of the faculty at Willamette University and has private studios in Portland and Salem.

Ritsuko Wada, a native of Japan, is an Olean-based performer. She studied piano performance at the Showa College of Music.

She works regularly with Felix Piano Trio, Greifen Piano Trio, W Piano Quintet and was a founding member of the Chamber Music Society in Olean.

Wada begin her teaching career at the Yamaha Music School in 1991. Currently, she teaches at Jamestown (N.Y.) Community College.

The Spectrum series offers creative and performing arts presentations at little or no cost to the university community and the community at large.
