Pitt Panthers Beat La Roche

The Pitt-Bradford men’s basketball team picked up its biggest road win of the season Saturday, edging La Roche, 65-63 in AMCC action.

The Panthers raced out to 39-31 halftime lead after shooting a blistering 63 percent from the field. Pitt-Bradford was 15-24 from the field in the opening half, including 4-6 from beyond the three-point line, and outscored the Redhawks 22-10 at one point to build a 13-point lead.

In the second half, the margin would grow to 14 before La Roche rallied. Trailing 59-48, the Redhawks scored 10 straight points to pull within one with 4:03 left. Despite going without a field goal over the final 6:17 of the game, the Panthers strung together some timely stops on defense and went 6-9 from the free throw line to preserve the win.

Pitt-Bradford cooled off in the second half and finished the game shooting 49 percent from the floor. The Panthers failed to hit a three-pointer in the second half and were 13-19 from the line. The Redhawks were limited to 36 percent shooting and hit just seven of their 30 attempts from long-range. La Roche dominated the boards, outrebounding Pitt-Bradford by 14, and scored 25 points on 17 Panther turnovers.

Tyler Ferguson posted a game-high 17 points and added seven rebounds. Alex VanDeusen chipped in with 16 points and Jesse DeLoof had 13.

“The guys played extremely hard today,” said head coach Britt Moore. “We have not played well the past games so it is nice to get back on track.

“[Tyler] Ferguson took a charge late in the game that stopped any chance they had, and that is what our team is about, giving yourself up for the betterment of the group.”

Pitt-Bradford improves to 10-12 on the season and 9-7 in the AMCC. The Panthers play at Hilbert Wednesday in a matchup of two teams close in the league standings.
