Allegany's Zimmer Named Dean of
St. Bonaventure's School of Education

Joseph E. Zimmer, Ph.D., who has been associated with St. Bonaventure University for the past 20 years, has been named dean of the university’s School of Education, announced University President Sr. Margaret Carney, O.S.F., S.T.D.

Zimmer, an associate professor in the School of Education, has served as interim dean since August 2011 when dean Peggy Yehl Burke, Ed.D., was promoted to associate provost and dean of the School of Graduate Studies.

“Dr. Zimmer already has the respect and collaboration of colleagues in the School of Education and across the university community, so we are clearly positioned to pursue our goals outlined in our Strategic Plan, Becoming Extraordinary 2015,” said Michael J. Fischer, Ph.D., provost and vice president for Academic Affairs.

Zimmer said, “It is a great honor and privilege to lead this community of teachers and scholars into the future. Our goal is to continue to produce well-trained and ethical professionals to meet the demanding needs of schools and the community in these tough political and economic times.”

Appointed as assistant professor in 1992, Zimmer also served as assistant dean from 2001-2003. Since 1998, he has served as director of the M.S.Ed. Literacy Programs, director of the university’s Reading Center since 1997, and National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) coordinator since 2003. Since 2008, Zimmer has also served in the university-wide role as accreditation liaison officer for Middle States Regional Accreditation. He was chair of the Faculty Senate from 2000-2005.

“The university was fortunate to have had a number of highly qualified candidates for this position,” said Nancy Casey, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Elementary Education and chair of the search committee. “The faculty in the School of Education identified the characteristics we sought in our next dean and used that list to guide us as we interviewed candidates. I am delighted that Dr. Zimmer has been selected as our dean. He is a strong leader who will help us move all of our academic programs to the next level. He understands that even excellent programs must grow and change in response to the developing educational landscape and new findings from research on learning and teaching.”

Zimmer is a co-author of a $3 million grant to promote early reading programs in the Olean City School District. He has served on the editorial boards of the international journal The Reading Teacher, and the Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy. He is the author of numerous publications in the field of reading.

Prior to his service at St. Bonaventure, he was an assistant professor of English at Grand Valley State University and the reading/writing coordinator of the Thomas Edwards Learning Center at the University at Buffalo.

Zimmer earned his bachelor’s degree in English with a minor in teacher education, master of education degree in English education, and doctorate in reading education from the State University of New York atBuffalo. He and his wife, Kayla, a lecturer in the Department of ElementaryEducation at St. Bonaventure, live in Allegany.
