Get Ready for Thunderstorms

By Bill Deger, meteorologist for www.AccuWeather.com

www.AccuWeather.com reports after a weekend of damaging storms in the Plains and Midwest, the threat for severe thunderstorms will shift to the eastern Great Lakes and portions of the interior Northeast today.

Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Erie, Buffalo and Rochester are among the cities at risk for damaging winds and hail by this afternoon and evening.

Areas east of the Appalachians, including the big cities of the I-95 corridor, will be spared from any thunderstorm activity.

The gusty storms will fire in a very warm, unstable air mass along and ahead of a cold front pushing into eastern Ohio, western Pennsylvania and New York, as well as adjacent parts of southeastern Ontario, Canada.

Many of the areas that will be socked by these strong storms will experience near-record warmth this afternoon.

In the wake of the front and storms, temperatures will nosedive on Tuesday, similar to what will be happening over the Midwest today.

With the transition, the biggest concern late today will be powerful wind gusts from thunderstorms, in some cases greater than 50 or 60 mph. This threat will be enhanced by the fact that many storms will be organized in a linear fashion, or a 'squall line'.

Winds of this magnitude can easily bring tree limbs and power lines down.

The threat for large hail and tornadoes will be much lower today compared to this weekend over the nation's midsection, but still noteworthy.

Hail of any size can dent cars, while tornadoes are, of course, among nature's more deadly phenomena.

At the first sign of a strong storm, seek refuge in a safe and sturdy building. If a thunderstorm is warned for strong winds or even a tornado, mobile homes should be abandoned.

Though the threat for severe weather will be lower, numerous storms will continue to drench areas south near the frontal boundary through the Tennessee Valley and all the way to Deep South Texas.

Heavy rainfall and flash flooding will continue to be the primary concerns along that corridor.
