Cuomo: Possession of Pot in
Public Should Not be a Crime
Governor Andrew Cuomo doesn’t want possession of a small amount of marijuana in public to be a crime anymore in New York.
Cuomo is asking lawmakers to change the current law that allows police to arrest someone if a small amount of marijuana is found on them during a routine search.
If the law is changed a person would still be fined, but would not be charged with a misdemeanor offense. Burning marijuana in a public place would remain a misdemeanor.
Cuomo's administration says the arrests of young people can negatively affect their future ability to get jobs and bogs down the courts with minor offenses.
