Teacher, Coach Chet Billings

Chester J. "Chet" Billings, 83, of 75 Jefferson St., passed away, Friday, May 3, 2013 at the Bradford Manor.

Born June 9, 1929, in Clermont, he was a son of the late Charles L. and Mae (Huber) Billings.

On February 21, 1953 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Smethport he married Nancy (Anderson) Billings who survives.

Mr. Billings was a 1947 graduate of Smethport High School and Clarion State College in 1958. He had also attended Temple University and Penn State University. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1951, he served during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged in 1953.

Mr. Billings was a junior high school Earth Science Teacher in the Bradford Area School District for 39 years. Throughout his teaching career he also coached, junior high boys basketball, varsity boys basketball, varsity girls basketball, and varsity girls golf. During his time as a coach, he had the honor of taking three different varsity sports to the District 9 Championships. He loved to fish, hunt, and was an avid golfer, including three hole in ones.

He was a member of the Emanuel Lutheran Evangelical Church, Pennsylvania State Education Association, and Smethport Country Club.

In addition to his wife Nancy of 60 years he is survived by three daughters, Rebecca Billings, and Greta Billings, both of Bradford, and Dina (George) Stepanenko, of Naples FL, two sons Matthew (Barbara) Billings, of Shippensburg and Nathan (Marybeth) Billings, of Bliss, NY, a sister, Helen Rossi, and a brother, Norm Billings, both of Rochester, NY, two grandchildren Amanda (Anthony) Hopkins and Scott Muncer both of Texas.

A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2013, from 9:30am to 10:30am in the Emanuel Lutheran Evangelical Church, where funeral and committal services will be held at 10:30am with Rev. Thomas Pierotti Interim Pastor, and Rev. Douglas Soley, retired pastor co-officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes, Inc.

Memorials, if desired, may be made to the Emanuel Lutheran Evangelical Church, or the charity of the donor's choice.
