'Dr. Dave' Talks Science with GGB Students
“Dr. Dave,” aka Dr. David K. Merwine, associate professor of biology at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, talks with first graders at George G. Blaisdell Elementary School about the evolution of brain science. He acted the parts of Franz Josef Gaul, father of the mistaken “science” of phrenology, and the characters in a story made famous by neurologist Oliver Sacks, “The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat.” Here, as Gaul, he uses a plastic magnifying glass as a monocle to measure a student’s head. Merwine also brought with him models of human, rat and fish brains and small plasticized brains that elicited screams of “ewww!”
