I liked the book, just not as much as I wanted to.<br /><br />It
centers around two women at the turn of the century who have each just
lost their husbands, in different circumstances, as well as their infant
sons, in similar circumstances.<br /><br />When Alice finds herself
pregnant and alone in Chicago she tries to find her husband and ends up
in New Orleans where, she is introduced to the wealthy Constance who is
an emotional wreck after the loss of her husband.<br /><br />Dorthea,
another strong female character, thinks Alice creating a gown for
Constance to wear during Mardi Gras, as part of the first all-female
krewe, is exactly what both women need. <br /><br />The mystery of the
disappearances of the husbands keeps the story moving more than the
Mardi Gras aspect, although some of the history was interesting.<br /><br />I would recommend the book with the caveat that it falls just short of being great.<br /><br /><i>I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.</i></span></span><p></p>Annehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10965807056537672833noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4170591189521009207.post-14563852492826628772022-07-12T10:24:00.003-04:002022-07-12T10:24:44.259-04:00The Seagirt Lighthouse<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVXeKrqrMju_HYw3-DPBxth5Qm7Jv3FS9Fxx_GeIYGoUZVtlPkuWP97_rj4DSzqmFoZPKnIZVUD7VzTfjve-36YvjNAXKIjMLBfJuZePNFAkw01UFuGFl7jXecqjm6KAO2D4yOKhRMybEQ7UsRT5_2WpDGA3TrfmwIWDhhRYfnr14CnCGcTWKGXLp0/s960/289587194_5867395953276429_4284916332855494028_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="720" data-original-width="960" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVXeKrqrMju_HYw3-DPBxth5Qm7Jv3FS9Fxx_GeIYGoUZVtlPkuWP97_rj4DSzqmFoZPKnIZVUD7VzTfjve-36YvjNAXKIjMLBfJuZePNFAkw01UFuGFl7jXecqjm6KAO2D4yOKhRMybEQ7UsRT5_2WpDGA3TrfmwIWDhhRYfnr14CnCGcTWKGXLp0/s320/289587194_5867395953276429_4284916332855494028_n.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><i><span style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: white; color: #050505; display: inline !important; float: none; font-family: "Segoe UI Historic", "Segoe UI", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; text-align: start; text-decoration-color: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-thickness: initial; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;">Abraham Wolfe, First “Keep” of the Sea Girt Lighthouse</span></i><br style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: white; color: #050505; font-family: "Segoe UI Historic", "Segoe UI", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-decoration-color: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-thickness: initial; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;" /><span style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: white; color: #050505; display: inline !important; float: none; font-family: "Segoe UI Historic", "Segoe UI", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-decoration-color: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-thickness: initial; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">The keepers assigned to Sea Girt Lighthouse were a colorful and diverse group.</span><p></p><p><span style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background-color: white; color: #050505; display: inline !important; float: none; font-family: "Segoe UI Historic", "Segoe UI", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: 2; text-align: start; text-decoration-color: initial; text-decoration-style: initial; text-decoration-thickness: initial; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: 2; word-spacing: 0px;">Major Abraham Wolf, a former Union Army major, was Sea Girt’s first keeper, posted in 1896. several reasons the little boy could have been kidnapped, and several
suspects who could have done the deed.<br /><br />While pursuing one of the
leads related to Laurie's father they uncover more than they ever
expected, which may help clear the father's name in a case in which a
convict has accused him of lying about a confession. <br /><br />The story includes many twists and turns, even after the kidnapper's identity is revealed. <br /><br />It's been a long time since I read a book that I just couldn't put down, and it sure felt good. <br /><br />Mary
Higgins Clark and Alafair Burke made such a good team on the Under

But we still have Alafair. <p></p>Annehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10965807056537672833noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4170591189521009207.post-35694854203167235922022-07-08T12:54:00.002-04:002022-07-12T10:48:37.363-04:00Mini Book Review: Grounds for Murder by Tara Lush<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXyYrNnPcZJNRnjdBrUpRrfs-Rf26rEEOO6xeeDqkBCVKa69qQQD-EIJGfTjTdZArvm_tWX2nXipWUPVjohvIa2Ytw0vA4rbrA4EDySu_h7SxGtmgBapeekzcRkYZo_Z2qJ5O6OEEZuXE6dT2OuzRh-ON7shPM-AVEzkzPEE3uxCo7btd-fkm7jQQQ/s901/53159598.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="901" data-original-width="600" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXyYrNnPcZJNRnjdBrUpRrfs-Rf26rEEOO6xeeDqkBCVKa69qQQD-EIJGfTjTdZArvm_tWX2nXipWUPVjohvIa2Ytw0vA4rbrA4EDySu_h7SxGtmgBapeekzcRkYZo_Z2qJ5O6OEEZuXE6dT2OuzRh-ON7shPM-AVEzkzPEE3uxCo7btd-fkm7jQQQ/s320/53159598.png" width="213" /></a></div><br /> <span class="readable reviewText"><span id="freeTextContainerreview4792295836">This

<span id="freeTextreview4551686778">This book is as close to perfect as they come. <br /><br />I've
been reading a lot of World War II-era fiction lately and Until We Meet
is, by far, the best. The characters are so well-developed that I grew
to love them all -- even with their faults and missteps. I felt their
pain and joy and every other emotion right along with them.<br /><br />The
suspenseful part of the story -- which goes through about 2/3 of the
book -- kept me turning pages and hoping that it turned out the way I
wanted it to. And, although I'm not a big romance fan, this one was
intriguing as it was all through letters between a soldier and a girl
he'd never met in person. The suspenseful part was that he was keeping
some secrets from her that could change everything. When I tell you I
cried almost all the way through the last 20 pages I am not going to
tell you if they were happy or sad tears. Read it for yourself. You
won't regret it. <br /><br /><i>I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review</i></span></span><p></p>Annehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10965807056537672833noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4170591189521009207.post-905382000023880622022-07-08T12:43:00.002-04:002022-07-08T12:43:25.060-04:00Mini Book Review: Absolute Fear by Lisa Jackson<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWIXpE1QevWimY30QJ00F8IvyT81-fp671xC0ONpUGBYWW2lEu7zpp1yQbJb_EzrY57cVkaDWXNDAJbZbp-KkyCk0E-7IQcIAQ5yo5yw-pr64P2s5fKOyfRqqTyJxB0Hm84N0VIXcwYDRW8Tq-Ci7_VpPqrNVTWDNc4kz1OLw2CKOimNviUHfn5YyA/s475/276877._SY475_.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="475" data-original-width="316" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWIXpE1QevWimY30QJ00F8IvyT81-fp671xC0ONpUGBYWW2lEu7zpp1yQbJb_EzrY57cVkaDWXNDAJbZbp-KkyCk0E-7IQcIAQ5yo5yw-pr64P2s5fKOyfRqqTyJxB0Hm84N0VIXcwYDRW8Tq-Ci7_VpPqrNVTWDNc4kz1OLw2CKOimNviUHfn5YyA/s320/276877._SY475_.jpg" width="213" /></a></div><br /> <span class="readable reviewText"><span id="freeTextreview4742918999">I
love when I think I have the mystery all figured out and then learn
that I don't. Not only was I wrong about who the killer was, there were
several twists that I did not see coming. <br /><br />The main character,
Eve, is fairly likable. I'm chalking up the qualities I don't like to
the trauma she suffered in the beginning of the book. I assume we'll be
seeing her in future New Orleans books, but I don't want to say why
because I'd be giving something away.<br /><br />Part of the reason I like
the book so much is that one of the major themes is mental health and
mental health treatment, and how far the medical community has advanced

Scottoline is one of my favorite authors so it pains me to say I didn't
like this book and found it tedious and annoying at times.<br /><br />The
story started out interesting ... as a family is driving home one of the
family members is shot and killed and the rest of the family is put
into the witness protection program. But then it gets boring with way
too much about the mourning and how unfair the whole situation is. And
let's not even get into the excruciating detail in which she describes
everything from the house to putting away groceries. As I said, I like
the author, so I'm not saying this to be mean, but she must have gotten
paid for product placement. I don't remember so many brand names being
mentioned unnecessarily in any book I've ever read.<br /><br />I found the
first half of the book, simply, boring, but stuck with it because
Scottoline has never disappointed me before. As the second half started I
had high hopes but then it just got stupid. The twists and turns were
either too convenient or too far-fetched, and the underlying premise was
too contrived. I considered not finishing because I really didn't care
what happened to any of the characters, except the dog. And that dog is
the only reason I listened to the last two hours. At least I got some
housework done while I listened.</span>

romances run wild in this traditional, laugh-out-loud farce. Two nuns at
the Sisters of Perpetual Sewing have been secretly making wine to keep
the convent's doors open, but Paul and Sally, reporters and former
fiancees, are hot on their trail. They go undercover as a nun and
priest, but their presence, combined with the addition of a new nun,
spurs paranoia throughout the convent that spies have been sent from
Rome to shut them down. Wine and secrets are inevitably spilled as

<p></p><p style="margin-bottom: 0in;">Nearly 30 years after its release,
“Philadelphia” is still one of the most powerful films I've ever
seen.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;">Tom Hanks plays Andy, the high-powered
lawyer who gets fired because he has AIDS, although the law firm's
partners deny that, and claim he was fired because of poor
performance and almost loosing a big client. His character doesn't go
through a lot of emotional or mental changes, but the physical
transformation from a fairly healthy-looking man to a man literally
on his death bed is remarkable.
</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;">Denzel Washington's character, Joe,
changes the most, going from someone who was scared after learning he
shook the hand of someone (Andy) who had AIDS, and being disgusted by
gay men, to developing an affection and respect for Andy. Andy hires
Joe, an “ambulance chaser,” to represent him in a lawsuit against
the law firm when every other lawyer he contacted turned him down.
</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;">The supporting cast is phenomenal.
Among them, Jason Robards as a law firm partner, Joanne Woodward as
Andy's mother, Antonio Banderas as Andy's partner, and Mary
Steenburgen as the law firm's attorney.
</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;">I had the pleasure of speaking with
Steenburgen about this role and, not surprisingly, she said it was
difficult for her because she had just lost a good friend from AIDS
and, for years, she had been fighting pharmaceutical companies to
step up and do right by AIDS patients. Elizabeth Glaser, one of her
best friends (not the one who died right before filming), contracted
AIDS from a blood transfusion and unknowingly passed it to two of her
children. At one point she told director Jonathan Demme that he
should recast her part because she was too emotional. He said that
made her perfect for the part and later even added the line, “I
hate this case,” which she whispers to another lawyer. She was able
to play her character, knowing she felt that way but still believed
everyone deserves a good defense.
</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;">I wouldn't be me if I didn't also
mention that the title song from the film made Bruce Springsteen an
Oscar winner.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</p>

I'm not going to try to tie up all the story lines but I do have an idea about one.</p><p>You know how in the movie "Titanic" when Rose died her younger self reunited with Jack? That's how I see Rebecca and Jack's story ending. Her younger self will reunite with him in some heaven-like place and he'll be holding baby Kyle.</p><p>I have ideas and wishes for the other stories (like Kevin and Madison get back together) but haven't really thought them out that much.</p><p>However it ends, though, I'll be sad that it's over. I'll be especially sad if Mandy Moore doesn't win the Emmy she's deserved since the show started.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/hfu7vf8kvjA" width="320" youtube-src-id="hfu7vf8kvjA"></iframe></div><br /><br /><p></p>Annehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10965807056537672833noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4170591189521009207.post-27879302432817313392022-02-24T10:19:00.003-05:002022-02-24T10:19:19.798-05:00Review: Sundance TV's 'State of the Union'<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;"> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="BLOG_video_class" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/EbR6an-LcDw" width="320" youtube-src-id="EbR6an-LcDw"></iframe></div><br />I didn't hear about “State of the
Union” during its first season (I was in a bad place mentally
then.) but saw a preview for the current season with Patricia
Clarkson (one of my favorites) and Brendan Gleeson, and decided I
should check it out.<p></p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;">Sundance TV's “State of the Union,”
is a short-form series written and created by Nick Hornby and
directed by Stephen Frears. It consists of 10 10-minute segments
featuring couples discussing their problems right before going to a
marriage counseling session.
</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;">Chris O’Dowd and Rosamund Pike played
Tom and Louise during the first season and were discussing whether
their marriage could and should be saved after she cheated on him.
Through their humorous but serious conversations we learn why she
cheated and what got them both to that point. We also learn about how
they met and much, much more. I was amazed at how much could be
jammed into 10 minutes.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;">Clarkson and Gleeson are a very
different couple and are seeking counseling for a different reason,
although they don't realize it at first. They end up trying to figure
out the best way they can stay in each other's lives if they get
divorced. She is a liberal activist Quaker who seems to be just
finding herself in her 60s. He is everything younger people think of
when they say “Boomer.” Although they are so different, and want
different things, they still love each other and you can feel their
pain as they realize their marriage isn't going to work any longer.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;">This season also had a third major
character, Jay the asexual manager of the coffee shop where
Clarkson's and Gleeson's characters meet, who actually steals several
of the scenes.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;">
</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 0in;">The only bad thing I can say is that
it's so easy to binge without feeling guilty for wasting time that I
went through it too fast and now I want more.</p>
