UPB Holding Black History Month Events

The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford will hold a variety of events during February in recognition of Black History Month, ranging from open mic night to the annual Cultural Festival.

The events are sponsored by the Black History Month committee, which wanted to increase its offerings this year and emphasize the education of students, faculty and staff about African-Americans and their accomplishments. The public is invited to the following events.

Events kick off with a cultural dinner in the dining hall on Feb. 1 that will feature a soul food menu developed by the African-American Student Union, music by black artists and informational posters about famous and influential black Americans.

Dinner is from 5 to 7 p.m. in the KOA Dining Hall and costs $8.60.

Dr. Richard G. Frederick, professor of history, will discuss the “International Sweethearts of Rhythm” at 7 p.m. on Monday, February 6, in the Mukaiyama Room of the Frame-Westerberg Commons. It is free and open to the public.
“The International Sweethearts of Rhythm began as a girls’ amateur swing band that was sent out by a small, African-American school in rural Mississippi to raise money for the school to stay open,” Frederick said. “To the surprise of everyone, they became a nationally famous, very professional all-girls’ band which played in all the big venues of the early ’40s, entertained the troops during World War II, and travelled overseas at the end of the war.”
The event is sponsored by the History/Political Science Club.

On Feb. 11, the SUNY Cortland Gospel Choir will perform at 6:30 p.m. in the Bromeley Family Theater of Blaisdell Hall. The choir is a diverse group of students from throughout New York state and is part of the Cortland African American Studies Program. The performance is part of the university’s Spectrum Series.

On Feb. 16, students are encouraged to bring poetry, stories, music or other talents to open mic night from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in Harriett B. Wick Chapel.

The entire campus community will celebrate its diversity at the popular annual One World Cultural Festival from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Feb. 25 in the Frame-Westerberg Commons. Those attending are asked to bring a dish to share, preferably one from their culture.

On Feb. 28, spoken-word artist Asia Samson brings The Asia Project to Pitt-Bradford from 9 to 11 p.m. in the Mukaiyama University Room of the Frame-Westerberg Commons.

Asia has been featured on HBO Def Poetry and BET J Lyric Café and has been awarded the Performer of the Year award by the Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities. Find out more at theasiaproject.com.

AG Wants Change of Venire in Sandusky Child Sex Abuse Case

State prosecutors are asking Judge John Cleland to bring in a jury from another county in the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse case, saying pretrial publicity and the role Penn State plays in the community would affect potential jurors.

A motion filed today by the attorney general's office says coverage of the case has been "spectacular in its breadth and intensity."

Prosecutors say it wouldn't be fair or practical to ask people in Centre County to insulate themselves from Penn State.

Cleland has not said yet when he will hear arguments on the motion.

Sandusky denies the allegations he abused 10 boys over 15 years.

At the Hop...

Tuesday, January 31, 2012 was a step back in time for the students and staff of St. Bernard Elementary/Middle School. The activities for the day centered on the decade of the 1950’s.

Students in poodle skirts, leather jackets, pony tails and slicked back hair, danced the afternoon away to Elvis, Fats Domino and many others at a “sock hop” held in the gym.

The week which celebrates the impact and importance of Catholic Education is celebrated nationally. The national theme, “Faith. Academics. Service”, is brought to life through activities and special events adopted by schools across the United States.

St. Bernard’s Elementary/Middle School has programs for students Preschool through 8th grade. Children of all denominations are welcome. Registration for the 2012-2013 school year runs March 12th through the 16th, 8:30AM – 3:00PM.

Pirates Opening New Bar, Lounge

The Pittsburgh Pirates will open a new open-air bar and lounge in the right field corner of PNC Park this season as part of a multi-year sponsorship deal with Anheuser-Busch.

Budweiser Bowtie Bar will be on the main concourse level just left of the right field grandstands, and will be available to all ticket holders.

The Pirates say it should ready by opening day on April 5. It will be the first new bar or restaurant at the ballpark since the Hall of Fame Club replaced Outback Steakhouse in 2008.

4th Annual 'Beyond Funny' Show to Benefit CARE for Children, TVTA

The fourth annual “Beyond Funny” improvisational comedy show by the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford’s Pitt Improvers will raise money to benefit the Tuna Valley Trail Association and CARE for Children.

The family-friendly show will take place at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 10 in the Bromeley Family Theater in Blaisdell Hall at Pitt-Bradford. Adult tickets are $5, and students and children are free. Tickets will be available at the door.

Performers in the student improv troupe will create scenes on the spot based on suggestions from the audience. Last year’s show raised more than $1,000 for three Bradford-area nonprofit organizations.

Kristin Asinger, Improvers advisor and visiting instructor of sports medicine, said that each year, the Improvers choose one to three organizations to be involved in the show.

“The Tuna Valley Trail Association has made such an impact on our community for hikers, cross-country skiers and cyclists,” Asinger said of choosing the TVTA. “CARE for Children worked with us last year, and we wanted them to benefit again because they are in the process of building a new facility.”

Pitt-Bradford Athletic Department Recognized for Work with CARE

The athletic department at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford received the Jostens Community Service Overall Winner Award from the National Association of Division III Athletics for its longstanding relationship with the CARE For Children program and other service projects.

The award was presented to Lori Mazza, director of athletics, at the NCAA Convention in Indianapolis, Ind.

The awards program is co-sponsored by the NADIIIAA and Jostens and is intended to recognize the many contributions Division III student-athletes regularly make to their campuses and local communities. The program awards winners in the following three categories: one-time project, array of projects, and on-going project.

Pitt-Bradford was recognized for its relationship with the CARE for Children program and other service projects. In 2001, then-head women’s basketball coach Daly Ann Fuller approached CARE with the idea of collaborating on an adaptive basketball camp to give children with motor and learning deficiencies the opportunity to play basketball. The initial camp had 20 participants. Now, 10 years later, the basketball mini camp has grown to more than 100 participants, who learn from the coaches and players on to dribble, pass and shoot.

Since then, more than 230 student-athletes in all 14 sports have offered their time and support to the CARE organization.

In addition to its work with CARE, the athletics department has taken part in many other community service projects, including serving food to needy families at the Friendship Table, participating in reading programs at local Bradford schools, raising $600 for local veterans and assisting with a veterans breakfast to honor all veterans in the campus community.

“To accept this award on behalf of our student-athletes was a privilege,” said Mazza. “There are so many accomplishments that our athletes are recognized for, however, many times community service is overlooked.

“Although we do an array of projects with the Bradford community, our ongoing relationship with CARE is one we are very proud to be a part of. To be recognized by our peers within all of Division III for our community service is truly a testament to the quality of student-athletes we have at Pitt-Bradford.”

As well as receiving a commemorative trophy, the department received a $1,000 contribution from the NADIIIAA and Jostens.

The NADIIIAA is an association comprised of athletics administrators from the nearly 450 institutions and 40 conferences competing at the NCAA Division III level. A primary purpose of the NADIIIAA is to encourage the continued development of athletics programs focused on the student-athlete and based on sound educational philosophy.

National Fuel Lowering Rates

Just last month National Fuel announced that it would be increasing its price – but today the company has announced a decrease in pricing.

Effective tomorrow the bill of a typical residential customer will go from $85 a month to $77 a month.

Nancy Taylor of National Fuel says continued decreases in the market price of natural gas due, in part, to increasing Marcellus Shale gas production, makes this quarterly adjustment possible.

In a state-required annual filing, National Fuel forecasted a 10.2 percent increase that would have been effective in August. That forecast was based on information developed in December.

SBU Again Hosting MATHCOUNTS

MATHCOUNTS, a national math contest for sixth-, seventh- and eighth graders, will be hosted by St. Bonaventure University on Feb. 11 in the William F. Walsh Science Center Amphitheater from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Chairman of the Department of Mathematics, Dr. Doug Cashing, will coordinate this year’s competition. Local middle schools will send four students and one coach to participate in the contest. Last year, Allegany-Limestone Central School, Cheektowaga Central School, and Tapestry Charter School from Buffalo were among the participants.

During a series of morning and afternoon rounds, students participate individually and as a team trying to advance their school further in the competition. The three individuals and schools that receive the top scores will win trophies. The three highest scoring schools will advance to the state competition, which will take place in March. Winners of the state competition will advance to nationals, which will be held in Orlando, Fla., on May 11.

According to the MATHCOUNTS website, “The mission of MATHCOUNTS is to increase enthusiasm for, and enhance achievement in middle school mathematics throughout the U.S.” As an incentive to participate in the contest, each year the MATHCOUNTS School Handbooks are provided to every middle school in the nation for free. Financial support from St. Bonaventure, anonymous grants and other generous donations help make this contest possible.

Bradford Girl Arrested in Salamanca

A Bradford girl is facing charges for allegedly stealing a woman’s purse at the Paradise Gentleman’s Club in Salamanca.

Sheriff’s deputies say 18-year-old Ali Childs took the purse Sunday night.

She was arraigned on a grand larceny charge Monday night.

Man Sentenced for Attempted Forgery

A Yorkshire, New York, man has been sentenced to 5 years’ probation on an attempted forgery charge.

25-year-old Justin Ippolito attempted to forge a signature while using another person’s unemployment benefit card.

The incident happened on December 8, 2010, in the Town of Yorkshire.

Man Pleads Guilty to Attempted Burglary

A South Dayton, New York, man has pleaded guilty to attempted burglary.

20-year-old Jordan Fish and another man broke into a building on November 3 with the intent to commit another crime, according to the Cattaraugus County District Attorney’s office.

Fish will be sentenced on April 2.

Cold Case Arrest Made for 1979 Beaver County Homicide

Harrisburg – The Pennsylvania State Police and the Beaver County District Attorney’s Office today announced the arrest of a Bridgewater man who is charged in the 1979 strangling death of Catherine Janet Walsh.

Gregory Scott Hopkins, 65, was arrested by state police on Sunday and charged with criminal homicide. He is being held at the Beaver County jail.

“I extend my sincere condolences to Catherine’s father, Mr. Caltury, her family and friends during this difficult time,” State Police Commissioner Frank Noonan said. “I’m very hopeful that this arrest will give the family some relief, knowing that a suspect has been charged with this unsolved murder.”

Walsh’s father discovered his 23-year-old daughter’s body when he went to her Monaca home on Sept. 1, 1979.

State police and the Monaca Borough Police Department began investigating, identifying Hopkins at the time as a possible suspect. Numerous items of evidence were sent to the State Police Crime Laboratory for processing during the entire course of the investigation. However, investigators were unable to generate enough evidence against Hopkins to make an arrest.

In late 2010, investigators resubmitted various items of evidence collected in connection with the case to the Pennsylvania State Police Greensburg Regional Crime Laboratory for forensic analysis. The lab concluded earlier this month that a sample taken from Hopkins positively matched evidence found at the scene.

“The purpose of resubmitting these items was to have the evidence examined using methods and technology that were not available to investigators in 1979,” Noonan said. “We are extremely pleased that justice is finally being served for Catherine. It shows the tenacity of the investigators involved and the staff at the State Police Crime Laboratory.

“Invaluable assistance from the Beaver County District Attorney’s Office was instrumental in the success of this investigation and the subsequent arrest of Hopkins,” said Noonan.

Possible Minimum Wage Hike in NY

New York Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver is pushing legislation that would increase the state’s minimum wage from $7.25 to $8.50 an hour, and would then adjust it for inflation every year.

Silver says census numbers show nearly half of the U.S. population has fallen into poverty or joined the ranks of the working poor.

A spokesman says Governor Andrew Cuomo has supported previous proposals to raise the minimum wage and will review this one.

Pitt-Bradford's Frederick to Speak on Girls' Swing band for Black History Month

Frederick explains that the band was originally formed by the founder of the Piney Woods School, Laurence C. Jones, who followed in the footsteps of Booker T. Washington in providing education to poor blacks in the South.

“The story of the Sweethearts is largely the story of Laurence Jones and the Piney Woods School,” Frederick said, “and it’s a great story, though one that’s not very well known.”

Frederick has taught at Pitt-Bradford since 1979, when he received his doctorate in history from Penn State. A native of Indiana, he received his A.B. from Indiana University and M.A. from St. Mary’s of Texas. He has published books on Warren G. Harding, Ellis Island, and William Howard Taft, as well as co-authoring a work on theoretical concepts in biology.

“We’re happy to have Dr. Frederick talking on this subject,” said Michael Morrison, a Senior History-Political Science major who is President of the History-Political Science Club. “Education for African-Americans in the post-Reconstruction South is an interesting topic and this should be an exciting way to approach it.”

Financial Aid Nights for High Schoolers

Four area schools will host a free Financial Aid Night for district high school students and their families, according to Senator Joe Scarnati (R-Jefferson).

Scarnati said those attending can find out how to apply for all types of financial aid, including completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is required to qualify for most student aid programs, including the Pennsylvania State Grant, the Federal Pell Grant, institutional awards and low-cost federal student and parent loans.

A student aid expert from the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) will be available at the Financial Aid Nights to provide information on grants and loans and answer questions.

“This is an excellent opportunity for students and their parents to get a better understanding of the student aid process and how to begin planning to fund their higher education,” Scarnati said. “Participants can learn about Pennsylvania-specific aid programs, as well as the importance of searching for scholarships and other awards to pay for education costs.”

Bona Women #26 in the Nation

Despite owning the third-most wins in the nation, the 20-2 St. Bonaventure women's basketball team just missed cracking the top-25 in the Associated Press Poll Monday for the first time in program history, checking in as the No. 26 team with 61 points.

The Bonnies – who sit atop the Atlantic 10 standings as the lone unbeaten team at 7-0 – were just nine points shy of No. 25 Texas Tech, which garnered 70. In last week's poll, 61 points would have placed Bona as the No. 23 team in country.

Only No. 1 Baylor (21-0) and No. 2 Notre Dame (21-1) have more victories than the Bonnies.

St. Bona is 9-2 against top-100 teams in the RPI (Ratings Percentage Index), which is a main ranking utilized by the NCAA Tournament selection committee when choosing its postseason participants. The Bonnies check in at No. 23 in the RPI rankings – the highest-ranked A-10 team.

Of the schools ranked No. 13-25 in the AP Poll, none has more RPI top-100 wins than St. Bonaventure.

Furthermore, SBU's five wins against teams ranked between No. 26-50 in the RPI are tied for the most in the nation with No. 2 Notre Dame, No. 6 Kentucky and No. 11 Ohio State.

The Brown and White has won nine straight games – the second-longest winning streak in program history – and its 9-0 road record is the best in the nation.

St. Bonaventure swept a pair of Philadelphia-based schools last week, defeating Saint Joseph's on Wednesday and La Salle on national TV Saturday. The win against the Hawks was already the fourth over a team picked to finish ahead of Bonaventure in the A-10 preseason rankings.

Bonaventure returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Pittsburgh to face 15-6 Duquesne. The Bonnies won the first meeting of the year, 61-53, in the conference opener. The Dukes were tabbed to finish 3rd in the A-10 in the preseason poll. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.

Two Hurt in Monday Morning Crash

Two people were hurt in a crash this morning on Route 394 in North Harmony.

Sheriff’s deputies say an SUV driven by 28-year-old Steven Munday of High Acres went out of control and went into a ditch at just after 8 a.m.

Munday was taken to WCA Hospital in Jamestown for treatment of his injuries. His passenger, 23-year-old Sean Munday was treated at the scene. No charges have been filed.

Woman Picked Up on Warrants

An Otto, New York, woman wanted on a number of charges is now in jail.

22-year-old Kristin Kulczky was picked up on three separate warrants. She was charged with two counts of burglary, along with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. She was also wanted for a Family Court violation.

Her bail is set at $11,000 and she will be back in court at a later date.

Sunday Book Talk Nick Lake's 'In Darkness'

"In Darkness" is a fictional look at a boy struggling to survive after in the 2010 earthquake, intertwined with stories of Toussaint l'Ouverture, the Haitian slave turned revolutionary leader.

Nick hopes, among other things, the book will put a focus back on Haiti and make people realize Haitians still need help.

Man Allegedly Damaged Sheriff's Car

A South Dayton, New York, man is accused of damaging a Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s patrol car during an incident last Saturday.

Deputies say when 20-year-old Bradley Comstock was asked to leave a home at 3 a.m. on January 21 he got upset and broke a window. While in custody he allegedly damaged the patrol car.

Comstock was sent to jail on $1,500 bail.

Girl Seriously Hurt in Potter Co. Crash

A Genesee girl suffered major injuries in an accident Thursday on Eleven Mile Road in Oswayo Township.

A pickup truck driven by 18-year-old Maranda Coyle went out of control while rounding a curve, left the road, hit a tree and landed on its side.

Coyle was taken to UPMC Hamot for treatment of head and leg injuries.

Sandusky Wants to See Grandchildren

Jerry Sandusky has filed a motion seeking to allow him to see his grandchildren, which is currently prohibited under his bail conditions.

The former Penn State assistant football coach is accused of sexually abusing 10 boys over a period of 15 years.

McKean County Judge John Cleland, who is presiding over the case, has scheduled a hearing for February 10.

Rebert Gets Life in Prison

Steven Rebert will spend the rest of his life in prison instead of being put to death for killing Wayne and Vicky Shugar in their Brockway home in April of 2010.

A jury deliberated until about 9 o’clock Friday night and could not come up with a unanimous decision, which is necessary for the death penalty to be imposed. Eight jurors voted for the death sentence; four voted against it.

The 46-year-old Emporium man is still a person of interest in the murders of Kevin Smith and Bill Fickel in Western New York. Rebert, at one time, lived near the men.

Luther Named SBS Advancement Director

Father Raymond Gramata, Pastor of St. Bernard Parish and Kimberly Mooney, Principal of St. Bernard Elementary/Middle School has announced Kristen Tate Luther will join the organization serving as Advancement Director.

As Advancement Director, Luther will manage fundraising, marketing, alumni and recruitment efforts for the school.

The new position is funded through the generosity of the Bradford Central Christian Charitable Trust, established for the specific purpose of supporting Catholic Education in the Bradford community.

Luther, an alumna of St. Bernard’s and Bradford Central Christian, is a graduate of Mercyhurst College earning a Bachelor Degree in Business Management.

A native of Bradford and a lifelong supporter of Catholic Education, Luther and her husband, Rich are parishioners of St. Bernard Church. Their children attend St. Bernard Elementary/Middle School.

Luther is a 10 year member of the St. Bernard School Advisory Committee, YWCA of Bradford Female Leadership Recipient and former Executive Director of the United Way of the Bradford Area.

Man Charged with Dangerous Burning

A Mount Jewett man has been charged with dangerous burning for setting fire to two mobile homes after being hired to demolish them.

State Police Fire Marshal Greg Agosti says 39-year-old Christopher Johnson was hired to demolish the mobile homes on Route 46, about a quarter of a mile north of Route 146 in Norwich Township. At around 11:23 a.m. on Saturday he allegedly set the fire.

A passing motorist reported the fire to McKean County 911. The Norwich Township, Smethport and Port Allegany fire departments responded to the scene. No one was hurt.

Dr. Karl F. Frankovitch, Emeritus Chief of Staff for the Shriners Hospital for Children in Erie, Pennsylvania and Medical Director of CARE for Children’s Rural Outreach Clinic, was honored last Friday evening for his 80th birthday.

In celebration of the occasion, the McKean County Commissioners deemed January 11, 2012 as “Dr. Karl F. Frankovitch Day” throughout the county with a proclamation recognizing his compassion and expertise; and the Bradford City Council also issued a city-wide proclamation recognizing his professionalism, wisdom and caring ways while treating thousands of children in the region.

Dr. Frankovitch has travelled to Bradford for 46 years to provide the opportunity for children to be evaluated for various orthopedic conditions, providing families with an alternative to extensive travel to out-of-town facilities.

Members of the CARE for Children staff, as well as members of the local Shrine Club, attended the celebration at the Erie Scottish Rite Education Center to honor Dr. Frankovitch, who is still actively evaluating and treating children during the monthly clinics at the CARE offices on Russell Boulevard.

Congressman Thompson Reacts to Forest Service Planning Rule

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Representative Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson today released the following statement in response to the U.S. Forest Service’s announcement of the Final Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (PEIS) for the National Forest System Land Management Planning Rule:

“Unlike national parks, our national forests are intended for multiple uses. This means our national forests are actively managed, and include activities such as timber harvesting, energy production and recreation,” said Thompson. “I remain committed to seeing that this goal of multiple uses is a central tenet of the nationally spanning planning rule.”

The National Forest Management Act of 1976 mandated that each of the country’s 155 national forests, with public input, establish individual management plans. The Forest Service’s planning rule provides the outline for establishing these forest plans. Despite ongoing efforts over decades to rewrite the current planning rule, the Forest Service still operates under a rule that was established in 1982.

Thompson, the Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee’s Conservation, Energy, & Forestry Subcommittee, has actively engaged the Forest Service since the agency first released a proposed rule on February 14, 2011. Thompson’s subcommittee held a hearing on this proposed rule in May. The hearing featured testimonies by U.S. Department of Agriculture Under Secretary of Natural Resources Harris Sherman, Warren County Commissioner John Bortz, and several other stakeholders.

“I appreciate the work of the Forest Service in finally moving towards a new planning rule, but we still have a number of issues to work through,” added Thompson. “I have made it abundantly clear to Forest Service Chief Tidwell and Under Secretary Sherman that I continue to have concerns with some provisions of this new rule. Specifically, I’m concerned about the lack of adequate emphasis on timber harvesting and not enough action to help prevent unnecessary, wasteful litigation. Therefore, I look forward to continuing to work with the Service on improving the rule and seeing that the Service succeeds in its core mission of multiple uses,” Thompson concluded.

The magazine recognized 247 hospitals outside of major metropolitan areas that are capable of providing first-rate care, even to patients with serious conditions or who need demanding procedures, according to Avery Comarow, U.S. News & World Report's health rankings editor.

Hamot was one of nearly 5,000 hospitals evaluated and was considered "high performing" in nine of 16 specialties: cardiology and heart surgery; neurology and neurosurgery; and orthopedics.

Jury Set to Deliberate on Rebert's Fate

A jury will start deliberating this afternoon on whether Steven Rebert should get the death penalty or life in prison.

On Thursday the jury heard from the 46-year-old Emporium man’s family about his normal childhood. They also heard from the family of Wayne and Vicky Shugar, who Rebert shot to death in their Brockway home in April of 2010.

Rebert is also a "person of interest" in two separate, unsolved murders in Western New York.

Man Accused of Committing Lewd Acts

A Belfast, New York, man is accused of committing lewd acts in front of 13-year-old boy over the past two weeks.

49-year-old Dan Rutar is charged with public lewdness and endangering the welfare of a child.

Rutar is in Allegany County Jail in lieu of $1000 cash bail.

Justice Reinvestment Initiative Launched

Governor Tom Corbett today encouraged members of the Justice Reinvestment Initiative, a newly-formed panel of judges, lawmakers, state cabinet members and other officials, as they begin studying ways to increase public safety in Pennsylvania and reduce spending on corrections.

Led by Mark Zimmer, chairman of the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency, and Department of Corrections Secretary John Wetzel, the group will meet regularly during the next several months to review data analysis, hear from local government representatives, prosecutors and public defenders, victim advocates, treatment providers and others, before crafting policy proposals.

“In order to keep Pennsylvanians safe, the Commonwealth has in the past years invested hundreds of millions of dollars to build additional prisons, expand parole supervision, and increase community-based treatment. Nevertheless, recidivism rates have not decreased significantly,” said Senate President Pro Tempore Joseph Scarnati (R-Jefferson). “This welcomed initiative will aid Pennsylvania policy-makers by identifying concrete methods to reduce correctional costs as well as proposing ways to limit once-incarcerated individuals from returning to prison."

The Bradford Area Public Library is holding a Groundhog Program from 11 a.m. to noon Monday to give people an educational and up close look at live groundhogs. This program is for all ages and the library staff says it's "bound to teach you something you didn't know about the timid animals."

Another upcoming event is Football Friday on February 3. We'll tell you more about that in a couple of days. Or, if you just can't wait, go visit the library on West Washington Street.

Golubock to Speak at Pitt-Bradford

Harvey Golubock, president of ARG Resources Inc., will speak on Feb. 6 at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford as part of its Executive Speaker Series.

Golubock will speak from 11 a.m. to noon in the Mukaiyama University Room of the Frame-Westerberg Commons. The event is free and open to the public.

A year ago, Golubock retired as president and chief operating officer of American Refining Group in Bradford, but he continues his relationship with the company as president of ARG Resources Inc. and as vice chairman of the board of directors at ARG.

American Refining Group Inc. purchased the Bradford refinery in 1997 from Witco Corp. The transition was led by Golubock, who was an executive with Witco before becoming president at ARG.

Golubock will speak about how he was able to turn around the company while at the same time convince employees that the new owner could be trusted and lead them to greater days.

Golubock was with Witco Corp. for 28 years, having started in 1969. At that time, he made the first of many subsequent trips to Bradford. His last position at Witco was as group vice president of lubricants. In 1997, he presided over the sale of the Bradford refinery to ARG, at which time owner Harry Halloran recruited him to run his new purchase.

Golubock is a member of the National Petrochemical and Refiner’s Association and a former chairman of its Lubricants and Wax Committee, and is a member of the Independent Lubricants Manufacturers Association, the Pennsylvania Oil & Gas Association and the Ohio Oil and Gas Association.

He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from City College of New York and a Master of Business Administration from Rutgers University.

He and his wife, Barbara, live in Bradford and Suffern, N.Y.

Overnight Winter Backpacking on ANF

Friends of Allegheny Wilderness and the Scandia Wilderness Committee are inviting people on an overnight winter backpacking trip into the proposed Scandia National Recreation Area over the weekend of February 11th and 12th.

This outing will give hikers a fine sense of wild, remote character of this eminently qualified prospective national recreation area.

FAW, the Scandia Wilderness Committee, and others seek to protect in perpetuity in its natural state this stunning wild area from all forms of development. Of particular concern to the organizations are development ideas that have been floated in the past that are tacky and egregiously inappropriate for this highly natural area.

The hike will begin Saturday morning from the north side of the proposed area along the Roper Hollow Road, and the group will hike south into the Hodge Run drainage from there. Participants should be prepared for off-trail hiking, and consider that there is possibility for deep snow at this time of the year. Saturday evening the group will stop along the way to make camp before dark, and will hike out Sunday morning.

There is no charge to participate, but hikers should bring all of their own food and camping equipment, and come fully prepared for whatever weather conditions may be encountered. Participants will meet late Saturday morning in Scandia, and then drive to the trailhead together. Woman Charged with Robbing Bank

A Jamestown woman has been arrested for robbing Lakeshore Savings Bank Wednesday afternoon.

Police say 49-year-old Sherry Cowart went into the bank at just before 4 o’clock and demanded cash from one of the tellers. She told the teller she had a weapon, but did not display it.

Police reviewed surveillance video, identified Cowart, found her on West Fourth Street with some of the money and charged her with robbery.

Attempted Murder Charge, OthersAdded in Holley Hammer Attack

The man accused of attacking another man with a hammer at the Hotel Holley is now charged with attempted murder.

Additional charges were filed today against 19-year-old Larry Shroyer Jr. of Bradford. He is also now charged with robbery; criminal solicitation of robbery for allegedly asking Kip Cobb to assist him in a robbery; theft of cash from the victim, 56-year-old James White of Buffalo; and ethnic intimidation.

District Judge Dominic Cercone explained the new charges to Shroyer via video conference and increased his bail from $100,000 to $150,000.

Shroyer is scheduled to appear in Central Court on February 2. This will be the first day Central Court will be held in the McKean County Courthouse instead of District Judge Bill Todd’s office in Smethport.

Shroyer is accused of hitting White with a hammer more than 20 times on Sunday in a room at the Holley. White is still being treated at UPMC Hamot.

Cabot: Testing at Dimock is Money-Waster

The President and CEO of Cabot Oil & Gas says the EPA is wasting money by launching an expanded investigation of water contamination in Dimock.

Dan Dinges sent a letter to the Environmental Protection Agency regarding the decision of the agency to initiate a water sampling program in Dimock Township.

He also says the EPA decision appears to undermine President Obama’s support for shale gas development as a key aspect of the country’s energy policy and economic recovery.

The state DEP says Cabot polluted Dimock’s aquifer with methane gas in 2008. Cabot has since fulfilled the terms of a DEP consent order, but some residents say their wells are still polluted with methane and toxic chemicals.

Feds: Drop Remaining Rigas Charges

Federal prosecutors have told a judge that the six-year-old indictment of Adelphia Communications founder John Rigas and his son Timothy should be dismissed.

Last week US District Judge John Jones III dismissed a conspiracy count against the Rigases. Prosecutors say, in light of that ruling, eight counts of tax evasion should be dismissed as well.

The IRS is still pursuing a civil case against them.

86-year-old John Rigas is serving a 12-year prison term and 55-year-old Timothy is serving a 17-year term after being convicted of stealing nearly $2 billion from Adelphia and lying about the cable company’s finances. John is expected to be released on January 23, 2018. Timothy’s expected release date is June 23, 2022.

Man Accused of Stalking Woman

A Ripley man has been arrested for stalking a woman in Westfield, New York.

49-year-old Robert Burgess is accused of stalking a woman between March of 2011 and earlier this month. State Police say the victim was “fearful for her safety and well being.”

After his arraignment Burgess was released on his recognizance, but a judge ordered him to stay away from his victim and not have any contact with her. He is scheduled to return to court on February 21.

Marijuana Found on Casino Floor

A Jamestown man is facing charges after a bag of marijuana allegedly fell out of his pocket and onto the floor of the Seneca Allegany Casino.

31-year-old Anthony Raymond is charged with unlawful possession of marijuana following the incident that happened at about 10:30 Monday night.

Sheriff’s deputies say after the bag of marijuana was found on the casino floor, they used surveillance video to find out where it came from.

Raymond will appear in Salamanca City Court at a later court.

The Bradford man accused of attacking another man with a hammer-like instrument Sunday at the Hotel Holley will be facing more charges.

Wednesday night District Attorney Ray Learn told WESB and The Hero that, “Additional charges will be filed but haven't been yet. They will be filed in the near future.”

19-year-old Larry Shroyer is accused of hitting 56-year-old James White more than 20 times. White is still being treated at UPMC Hamot.

Shroyer is jailed on $100,000 bail.

Court Rules Against Redistricting Plan

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has ruled in favor of the people who filed appeals to the Legislative Reapportionment Commission’s final plan.

The justices voted 4 to 3 to send the plan back to the commission with the majority saying in its written opinion that the approach was “contrary to law.”

The two-page order says current district lines will remain as they are until the commission comes up with a new plan.

Senate Minority Leader Jay Costa issued a statement saying, “We are thankful that the court and the many petitioners understood the concerns of the voters who took the time and effort to express their concerns to both the Commission and ultimately the Court. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court acted with respect for the Constitution, communities across our commonwealth, and the voters.”

Other members of the commission are House Minority Leader Frank Dermody, Senate and House majority leaders Dominic Pileggi and Mike Turzai and an appointed judge. They have not issued statements yet.

Three employees will be honored for 35 years of service to the university, Dr. K. James Evans, vice president and dean of student affairs; Thomas J. Sheeley, maintenance worker; and Cindy Cavallero, administrative assistant and office manager for student affairs.

Dr. Holly J. Spittler, associate dean of student affairs and director of career services, will be recognized for 30 years of service.

Linda K. Delaney, assistant director of sponsored programs and manager of payroll, will be honored for 20 years of service.

Man Accused of Hitting HouseWhile DUI Waives Hearing

A man accused of crashing his vehicle into an East Main Street house has waived his preliminary hearing.

23-year-old Hunter Olmstead of Eldred allegedly had a blood alcohol content of .23 percent at around 2 a.m. on December 3 when he crashed his Jeep into the house, according to papers filed in District Judge Dominic Cercone's office.

Olmstead is free on his own recognizance.

A Bradford man accused of illegally selling Oxycodone has waived his preliminary hearing.

58-year-old Harold Cook allegedly sold 4 pills to a confidential informant with the McKean County Drug Task Force for $60, according to papers filed in District Judge Dominic Cercone's office. The alleged incident happened on August 25, 2010.

Cook is free on unsecured bail.

Charges Against 'Habitual Pot Smoker' Bound to Court After Preliminary Hearing

Charges against a Bradford man accused of growing marijuana in his home so he could avoid the high street prices have been bound to court.

Police discovered the marijuana-growing operation at the Jackson Avenue home of 37-year-old Richard Wixson Jr. when they were looking into a report of an underage drinking party in November.

They found about 10 heat lamps shining down on two marijuana plants – one about 6 feet tall; the other about 2 feet tall. Police say there were special pots, tubs, totes, fertilizer, lights “and countless other related growing items in the room. The plants were thriving and about to be harvested with large buds,” according to papers filed in District Judge Dominic Cercone’s office.

“This was a nearly professional hydroponics growing operation,” police said in court papers.

According to the papers Wixson told police he had been growing the marijuana in the attic for about six months. He said he is “a habitual pot smoker and just was trying to avoid high street prices by growing his own.”

Wixson is free on bail.

Minor Injuries in Separate Accidents

Two people suffered minor injuries in an accident Tuesday afternoon on Art Line Road in Eldred Township.

Police say the tires on a car driven by 23-year-old Jay Rice II of Eldred went onto the berm of the road and when Rice tried to get back on the road he overcorrected and car skidded and spun around before hitting an embankment and flipping over.

The car landed on its roof but Rice and his passenger, 21-year-old Seth Hamilton of Eldred, were able to get out of the car and walk to a nearby house for help. They were taken to BRMC for treatment. Rice was cited for driving at an unsafe speed.

A Coudersport girl suffered minor injuries when her pickup truck hit a utility pole Sunday on Route 44.

Police say the 16-year-old was north on 44 when the truck went out of control, left the road and hit the pole.

She was taken to Charles Cole Memorial Hospital for treatment of her injuries. Police cited her for driving at an unsafe speed.

$18 Million Approved for Park Dam

HARRISBURG – The Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA) today approved an $18 million grant to fund rehabilitation of the George B. Stevenson Dam at Sinnemahoning State Park in Cameron County, announced Sen. Joe Scarnati (R-Brockway) and Reps. Martin Causer (R-Turtlepoint) and Matt Gabler (R-DuBois).

“This is an important investment in protecting the health and safety of people living along, or downstream from, the dam on First Fork Sinnemahoning Creek,” Causer said.

“I commend the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources for being proactive in identifying the potential for failure of this dam and acting to correct it,” Scarnati added. “Clearly, once this project is completed, it will meet the needs of area citizens and businesses, as it is vital in terms of not only public safety, but also economic development.”

The grant money will be used to construct a grout curtain and cutoff wall along the upstream toe of the embankment to eliminate or greatly reduce the amount of seepage through the rock foundation of the dam. Prior engineering studies have shown the potential for embankment material to wash away, threatening a failure of the dam that could impact towns and communities up to 140 miles downstream.

“While the investment in this project is significant, it is far more cost effective to prevent a flood than to recover from the damage it could cause families, business and communities,” Gabler said.

Elk Country Visitors Center Honored

Pennsylvania’s widely acclaimed Elk Country Visitor Center has earned independent honors for energy efficiency and environmental design, Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Secretary Richard Allan announced today.

“We are proud to learn yet another major DCNR Pennsylvania Wilds project has been awarded Gold LEED status by the U.S. Green Building Council,” Allan said. “Similar recognition recently was extended to the new Nature Inn at Bald Eagle in Centre County and the Tiadaghton State Forest Resource Management Center in Lycoming County.”

LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is an internationally recognized mark of design, construction and maintenance excellence that seeks to ensure buildings reflect the highest environmental and energy efficiency. Offered at four levels for new construction -- Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum -- the ratings gauge water and energy use, materials, and other design criteria.

“We recognize the effort that went into the design and construction of these three buildings, and the LEED honors they received can only broaden a visitor’s experience,” Allan said.

“The accent here is on learning,” Allan said. “When the ever-increasing Elk Country Visitor Center crowds learn to ‘Bugle like an Elk’ or wander the new ‘Discovery Room’ exhibits, we’re also hoping to introduce them to the center’s unique rainwater collection or geothermal heating and cooling systems.

“Guests at the Nature Inn are being introduced to modern accommodations and an up-close experience with nature, but they also may be using solar-heated shower and laundry water for the first time. Meanwhile, visitors at the Tiadaghton State Forest Resource Management Center will learn how ‘green’ roofs help minimize storm runoff and reduce heating and cooling costs.”

Beyond reduced waste and increased energy and water conservation, lower building operating costs justify efforts to attain LEED certification, Allan said.

“The Nature Inn was designed to be 26 percent more efficient than an average building built to meet code, and electric bills the past year show the building actually is using 29 percent less energy than the baseline case,” Allan said. “That’s an estimated annual energy savings of about $5,400.”

The Elk Country Visitor Center opened in September 2010 on 245 acres of DCNR land in Benezette, Elk County. It offers a four-dimensional story theater, permitting visitors to see and feel storms and other natural events; interactive interpretive exhibits; wildlife trails and viewing areas; wagon rides; year-round restrooms; and parking for cars, RVs and buses.

State funds totaling $6 million were earmarked for center construction with another $6 million coming from private donations. In 2009, DCNR partnered with the nonprofit Keystone Elk Country Alliance, a Pennsylvania-based wildlife conservation organization, to manage the center under a concessionaire management agreement with DCNR. The alliance receives no state funding to operate the center. Its mission is to conserve and enhance Pennsylvania’s elk country for future generations, and educate the public about conservation and resource stewardship.

The center’s LEED features include: rainwater collection and reuse systems; night sky-friendly light fixtures; use of locally available materials and certified wood from responsibly harvested timber; and geothermal heating and cooling systems.

The Nature Inn at Bald Eagle, the first facility of its type in Pennsylvania’s nationally recognized state park system, opened in September 2010, offering visitors modern accommodations and an up-close experience with nature. As a southern entrance point to the 12-county Pennsylvania Wilds, the 16-room inn affords visitors comfortable accommodations, wildlife watching and many other outdoor activities.

The inn’s LEED energy-saving and conservation features include: a high-efficiency geothermal heating and cooling system; solar collectors to heat water for showers and laundry; rain barrels and large cisterns to collect and store rainwater for flushing toilets; low-water consumption; widespread use of Pennsylvania hardwoods from certified forests; and direct access to hiking and biking trails.

The Tiadaghton State Forest District Resource Management Center in Waterville supports the district’s staffing and operational needs. It houses foresters, rangers and other employees, and serves as a year-round welcome center and restroom facility for state forest visitors. The building also serves as a portal to the Pine Creek Valley and the Pennsylvania Wilds regions.

LEED features include a vegetation-covered roof; bike trail; native landscaping species; reduction of paved parking spaces; storm-water retention; roof water collection and re-use; high performance insulation; sun shades and light shelves; energy efficient lighting; and geothermal heating and cooling. Delta President, Wife Donate $250,000 forSt. Bonaventure Business School

Understanding the value of education and the importance of keeping business competitive, Edward H. Bastian, class of 1979, and his wife, Anna, have committed $250,000 to St. Bonaventure University’s School of Business Campaign.

The gift will be used for a new business center on St. Bonaventure’s 500-acre campus.

“The professional, caring, and success-driven environment at St. Bonaventure University helped shape me into the man I am today,” said Mr. Bastian, president of Delta Air Lines and a member of the company’s Board of Directors. "The Franciscan values that I learned at St. Bonaventure have served me well in my career. Anna and I are very pleased to be able to give back to the school and help support this important initiative.”

The university is in the midst of a $15 million campaign to construct a new building to house its School of Business.

The new center will feature a financial services lab with electronic ticker tape, dean’s suite, corporate boardroom, state-of-the-art classrooms, break-out areas, spaces for student collaboration, team building and faculty research, innovative technology uses, and a commitment to sustainability.

Construction of the building is scheduled to begin by June, with occupancy set for fall 2013.

“The new School of Business center is a key element in our overall strategic plan,” said Sr. Margaret Carney, O.S.F., S.T.D., president of the university. “We have seen firsthand the power of new facilities on our campus, and know that investing in this building will position us to better compete for high-quality students and faculty who want to be part of a unique and distinctive scholarly environment."

The $15 million campaign will provide: $10 million for the construction of the new business center; $4 million in endowments for faculty and programmatic support to ensure a vibrant intellectual community; and $1 million for building endowment.

Nearly $13 million has been raised under the leadership of Robert Daugherty, ’77, University trustee and campaign chair.

“We are grateful for the financial commitments that have been made to date,” said Mr. Daugherty, a retired partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP. “Now we need the leverage of many. We need the help of our alumni, parents and friends to make this campaign a success.”

St. Bonaventure’s School of Business is one of only 5 percent of business schools worldwide to hold accreditation by the Association for the Advancement of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).

“We are in demand,” said Carol Fischer, associate dean of the School of Business, adding that some 30 percent of St. Bonaventure’s student body is composed of business majors.

“Our faculty, students and graduates have made the case for this new building,” Dr. Fischer said. “They have demonstrated through academic excellence and through success in the business realm that St. Bonaventure’s School of Business is world-class quality. Reaching our goal in this campaign will enable us to maintain and build upon our traditional strengths, as well as develop new strengths in our distinctive niches such as service learning.”

New website for travel highlights
Allegheny National Forest & Kinzua Bridge State Park

The Allegheny National Forest Visitors Bureau has launched a new website, visitANF.com, for travel and tourism focusing on the northwestern Pennsylvania tourism highlights of the Allegheny National Forest, the Kinzua Bridge State Park and extensive trail information.

VisitANF.com contains new features that make it easier for trip planners and potential visitors to find the information they need about the Forest region, including downloadable trail maps, current weather conditions, upcoming events, detailed attraction information, suggested driving and heritage tours, restaurants, and lodging information.

“We are excited about having a multimedia website that is user-friendly” said Linda Devlin, executive director of the ANFVB, the official destination marketing organization for McKean County. “New video, photos, and detailed mapping allow potential visitors to view the area and make detailed travel decisions from information now available online.”

The enhanced website is also now available in a “mobile friendly format” for display on smart phones connected to 3G and Wi-Fi networks. A video component-Life in the Forest-currently features four local attractions-the Kinzua Sky Walk, John Williams European Bakery Shop - baking in the test kitchen, Flickerwood Wine Cellars - the Zampogna family of winemakers, and fly-fishing at the Lodge at Glendorn.

Future development, will offer the opportunity for local businesses to partner with the ANF Visitors Bureau to produce a promotional video for their business or attraction.

Enhanced website features include an online shopping site that offers locally produced books, photographs and other quality items for worldwide purchase.

The website was developed by Smethport Web Services, Linda and Nathan Muller, who have been serving commercial and non-profit clients for more than two decades. During that time they have also written and illustrated 29 Internet technology books.

“The Mullers have not only delivered everything we asked for, but greatly exceeded our initial requirements,” Devlin said. “We are very pleased to have partnered with this website developer.”

The design of visitANF.com accommodates the immediate and long-term needs of the ANFVB members. It provides a platform for those companies that do not yet have their own websites and increases visitor traffic to those companies that have a current website presence.

A series of trail apps developed by students at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, working in partnership with the ANF Visitors Bureau, will be hosted on the new site allowing trail users to download detailed trail information when planning their future hiking/biking experiences in the region.

Future projects for the website will include the creation of additional trail apps, a wider selection of online products from local artisans and retailers, and promotion of the website address to the public and travel and tourism professionals.

“We face many challenges as the country recovers from the great recession - many of which were highlighted tonight. One thing, however, is clear: we need to keep the focus on jobs. I just spent several weeks back home, talking with Pennsylvanians. Everywhere I went I heard two things: create jobs and work together. We owe it to those we serve to make that our focus as well. I am grateful to have the opportunity to work with my colleagues from both chambers and from both sides of the aisle to extend the middle-class tax cuts and continue to strengthen the economy.

“I also look forward to more attention on the critical issue of manufacturing. Pennsylvania manufacturers have been hit hard by unfair trade practices by countries like China. The Senate has passed legislation to crack down on China’s currency manipulation. The House must follow suit and the Administration must do more to use its existing powers to level the playing field for U.S. workers.
“I hope that we build on the spirit of bipartisanship seen in the Chamber tonight as Democrats and Republicans sat together to create jobs and grow the economy.”

Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) issued the following statement tonight on the president’s State of the Union address:

“The president did suggest his willingness to work with Congress on a few pro-economic growth policies, and I will always welcome working with the president and anyone who wants to pursue ideas that will grow the economy and create jobs. However, the majority of the president’s speech was just business as usual for this administration and a retread of ideas that have already failed.

“Massive spending, tax increases, new additional regulations, and special-interest giveaways – these are the things that have helped to get us to where we are now – a weak economy without the kind of job growth that we need.

“What we need is for the president to unite Americans – not divide them, and to focus on opportunities – a growing economy that will create the jobs that we need. With unemployment at more than 8 percent and our nation’s debt at more than $15 trillion, we need to work together and pass meaningful solutions. I’m still going to fight for those policies, and I hope the president will come along with us on at least some of them.”

“The President had the opportunity to chart a new path on a set of priorities that the American people have called for and both political parties can agree on, and we heard some productive talk here tonight,” said Rep. Thompson. “But with almost 2 million more Americans out of work and having racked up the three largest annual deficits in the country’s history since the President took office, the American people are looking for more than just talk.”

“The President tonight pledged his commitment to energy security, yet his Administration’s actions run contrary to the rhetoric,” Rep. Thompson added. “While his acknowledgment that we need increased domestic production of oil and natural gas, on and off shore, was quite promising, to date the Administration has worked to counter attempts at making America's energy future more secure. The President’s denial of the Keystone XL pipeline, which has the potential to create thousands of jobs and add to our energy security, is the latest example of this White House’s failure to understand our nation’s energy needs and potential.”

“Today, our national debt is now larger than our entire economy thanks to Washington’s inability to end its addiction to out-of-control spending,” Thompson continued. “In the House, we’ve delivered for the American people by advancing bills to reduce spending, restore fiscal solvency, and encourage new job creation. In fact, we’ve acted on more than 30 bipartisan jobs bills, almost all of which have been denied consideration by the Senate. With any hope, the President will meet his commitment to ‘fight obstruction with action’ by calling on the Senate to work with the House on these important initiatives.”

Rebert Found Guilty of All Charges

A jury has found Steven Rebert guilty of killing Wayne and Vicky Shugar in their Brockway home in April of 2010.

The 46-year-old Emporium man was also convicted of burglary and theft for stealing rare coins and currency from the Shugars’ home.

The penalty phase of the trial starts Thursday. Jefferson County District Attorney Jeff Burkett is seeking the death penalty.

'Bloods' Member Sentenced in Catt Co.

A Franklinville man who police believe is a member of the “Bloods” street gang from New York City has been sentenced to 2 ½ years in state prison for selling crack cocaine on December 17, 2010, in Olean.

19-year-old Dakota Mix is also facing charges in McKean County for having drugs and paraphernalia in Bradford in May of 2010.

During the traffic stop, police saw a baggie with white powder in it. Police also saw a folding knife, although Mix had denied having any weapons in the vehicle.

During the stop, police were told that Mix was a “confirmed” member of the Bloods, and were advised to use caution, according to papers filed in District Judge Dominic Cercone's office.

Online court records say the last action taken against Mix in McKean County was the issuing of a bench warrant.

Man Sentenced for Raping Girl

A Franklinville man has been sentenced to five years in prison for raping a 12-year-old girl on May 21 in Farmersville.

19-year-old Leo Stromecki will also be on probation for 10 years when he’s released from prison.

Stromecki pleaded guilty to the charge in November in Cattaraugus County Court.

DEC: Drilling Company Polluted Stream in Allegany State Park

New York environmental regulators are seeking $187,500 in fines against a gas-drilling company for polluting a stream in Allegany State Park.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation has filed an administrative complaint against U.S. Energy, saying that storm water runoff from the company’s roads and well pads in the Allegheny National Forest washed a large amount of mud into nearby waterways, including Yeager Creek in the state park.

DEC also is requiring US Energy to install storm water and erosion controls to prevent any future water quality damage.

A pair of University of Pittsburgh at Bradford faculty members published or presented at conferences during the Fall Semester.

Dr. Kevin Ewert, associate professor of theater, had a chapter published in “Shakespeare Closely Read: Written and Performance Texts,” edited by Frank Occhiogrosso.

The chapter, “Close Enough Reading? Or, Trying to Ascribe the Actor’s Part in Analyzing Performance Texts,” originated as a paper for the 2008 International Shakespeare Conference in Stratford-upon-Avon, England.

The paper steps back from examining only the effect of an actor’s performance to understanding its origins and the choices made along the way, and suggests ways that the actor's specific contribution to the whole can be researched and studied by those not involved in rehearsals or the run of a production.

Dr. Donna Dombek, associate professor of education, made a poster presentation at the 40th annual Pennsylvania Association of Colleges and Teacher Educators’ Teacher Education Assembly in Harrisburg.

She presented the results of research in which she identified 14 essential components of teacher education, then asked a group of education alumni and cooperating teachers who hosted student teachers to rate the level of importance of each component and their preparedness on each. Results showed that the alumni agreed with the importance of the components, which will be used to improve the education program.

Closing Arguments Underway in Steven Rebert Murder Trial

Closing arguments are underway in trial of an Emporium man charged with killing a couple in their home in April 2010.

46-year-old Steven Rebert is accused of killing Wayne and Vicky Shugar in the Brockway home during a robbery, when he stole rare coins and currency.

If Rebert is convicted of first-degree murder, the jury must then decide whether he will get the death penalty or spend the rest of his life in prison.

Rebert is also a person of interest in two Western New York murders.

Jenkins is National Player of the Week

The U.S. Basketball Writers Association has selected St. Bonaventure guard Jessica Jenkins as its Women's National Player of the Week for games ending the week of Sunday, Jan. 22.

As the Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Week, Jenkins was nominated for the weekly award, which was chosen by a representative of the USBWA board of directors from a list of Division I conference players of the week.

Jenkins, a 5-8 senior from Marion, Ohio, set the Atlantic 10 record for career 3-pointers at 293 after she knocked down six as part of the 23 points she scored in Saturday's win at Charlotte. She also had 18 points and four 3-pointers in the previous win over Richmond last Wednesday.

She is the Bonnies' leading scorer with a 14.7 average and is fifth in the Atlantic 10 in scoring, helping the Bonnies (18-2, 5-0 Atlantic 10) to first place in the conference.

This is the first season that the USBWA has selected a women's national player of the week. The weekly national player of the week is added to the award's watch list, which will be released at mid-season.

Since the 1987-88 season, the USBWA has named a National Player of the Year. At the conclusion of the regular season, the USBWA will name finalists for the award, which is voted on by the entire membership of the USBWA. The winner of the 2012 National Player of the Year will be announced and presented at the USBWA's annual awards breakfast in Denver, site of the 2012 NCAA Women's Final Four.

Man Accused of Send Porn to Teen, Offering to Pay Her for Sex

A Great Valley man is accused of sending pornographic pictures to a teenage girl and offering to pay her for sex.

39-year-old Frederick Mix is charged with disseminating indecent material to a minor, promoting prostitution and endangering the welfare of a child.

Sheriff’s deputies say during November and December of last year, and also earlier this month, Mix electronically sent sexually explicit and pornographic pictures to a 16-year-old girl. On three separate occasions he also offered the same girl cash for sexual intercourse.

Mix was arrested and arraigned on Monday and sent to Cattaraugus County Jail.

Gillibrand Endorses Plan to Address Prescription Drug Abuse 'Epidemic'

Amid New York’s growing prescription drug epidemic, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand today endorsed Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman’s legislation to create an online database to report and track certain controlled substances.

Support from Senator Gillibrand follows the recent release of a report from the Attorney General detailing the growing prescription drug abuse crisis in every corner of New York State. Statewide, the number of prescriptions for all narcotic painkillers has increased by six million, from 16.6 million in 2007 to nearly 22.5 million in 2010.

“Abuse of addictive painkillers has increased drastically in the last decade, but our state’s regulation and monitoring of these powerful drugs has not kept up,” said U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand. “I strongly support Attorney General Schneiderman’s I-STOP bill, which would help to rein in doctor shopping, prevent the use of forged prescriptions, and identify patients in need of addiction treatment. It’s the right solution to tackle the growing epidemic of prescription drug abuse.”

“From national leaders like Senator Gillibrand to law enforcement officials and health care advocates, support is growing every day to create the I-STOP database to address the epidemic of prescription drug abuse here in New York,” said Attorney General Schneiderman. "The time is now to streamline communication between health care providers and pharmacists to better serve patients, stop prescription drug trafficking, and provide treatment to those who are addicted.”

Prescription drug abuse is the country’s second most prevalent illegal drug problem, and recent reports and studies have documented corresponding data in the state. For example:

Statewide prescriptions for hydrocodone have increased 16.7 percent, while those for oxycodone have increased an astonishing 82 percent;

In New York City, the rate of prescription pain medication misuse among those age 12 or older increased by 40 percent from 2002 to 2009, with nearly 900,000 oxycodone prescriptions and more than 825,000 hydrocodone prescriptions filled in 2009;

In Buffalo, New York’s largest methadone clinic outside of New York City, Catholic Health System, has begun to reorganize its service to accommodate an increase in care needed to treat the number of opiate-addicted expectant mothers and newborns;

On Long Island, both crisis and non-crisis admissions to drug treatment that involve opiates other than heroin and have increased at alarming rates. Between 2004 and 2009, the number of deaths due to the toxic effects of prescription opioids more than tripled in Nassau County; and

In the North Country, health care facilities have experienced a staggering increase in the percentage of non-crisis admissions for substance abuse involving prescription narcotics, eclipsing cocaine and heroin in Clinton and Franklin Counties, and surpassing even marijuana in St. Lawrence County.

New York’s current prescription monitoring program requires pharmacists to report controlled substances they dispense at least once every 45 days. There is no tracking of prescriptions written and there is no mechanism whatsoever for pharmacists to ensure that a prescription presented is valid.

Supported by a broad coalition of law enforcement, health care experts and lawmakers, I-STOP will vastly enhance the effectiveness of the present system. Its goal is to enable doctors and pharmacists to provide prescription pain medications, and other controlled substances, to patients who truly need them. At the same time, it will arm them with the necessary data to detect potentially dangerous drug interactions, identify patterns of abuse by patients, doctors and pharmacists, help those who suffer from crippling addictions and prevent potential addiction before it starts.

Attorney General Schneiderman’s I-STOP legislation:

requires the Department of Health to establish and maintain an online, real-time controlled substance reporting system to track the prescription and dispensing of controlled substances;

requires practitioners to review a patient's controlled substance prescription history on the system prior to prescribing;

requires practitioners or their agents to report a prescription for such controlled substances to the system at the time of issuance;

requires pharmacists to review the system to confirm the person presenting such a prescription possesses a legitimate prescription prior to dispensing such substance; and

requires pharmacists or their agents to report dispensation of such prescriptions.

These enhancements of the state’s prescription drug monitoring program are all necessary to assist in patient care by providing a doctor with a patient's accurate and up-to-date controlled substance prescription history; eliminate the problem of stolen and forged prescriptions being used to obtain controlled substances from pharmacies; crack down on illegal ‘doc-shopping,’ the practice of visiting several different doctors and pharmacies for prescription drugs; facilitate prosecutions of crooked doctors; and achieve significant savings for public and private health insurance programs.

Smith Bill to Shrink the Size of Legislature Heads to House Floor for Consideration

HARRISBURG – A bill to reduce the size of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives to 153 members, from the current 203 members, heads to the House floor, Speaker of the House Sam Smith (R-Jefferson/Armstrong/Indiana) said today after the bill passed out of committee.

The bill, House Bill 153, authored by Speaker Smith, passed the House State Government Committee by a vote of 18-6.

“There is nothing magical about the number 203, in fact, it came about by accident, yet reports and studies have indicated that groups more than 150 tend to be less efficient,” Smith said. “Reaching a consensus with 203 people on major and controversial issues has proven more difficult in recent times.”

With 203 members, the Pennsylvania House of Representatives is the second largest in the country.

“In order to right-size Pennsylvania’s government, the Legislature needs to put its own house in order,” Smith said. “Today’s committee vote positions the bill for consideration by the full House in the next several weeks.”

To change the size of the Legislature requires an amendment to the state Constitution, which means the same bill must be debated and passed in two consecutive sessions, and subsequently approved by referendum vote of the people of Pennsylvania.

Ex-Leon FD Treasurer Pleads Guilty

The former treasurer of the Leon Fire Department has pleaded guilty in Cattaraugus County Court to stealing more than $33,000 from the fire department.

75-year-old Frederick Weaver falsified business records for the fire department between January 2008 and February 2011.

Weaver will be sentenced on April 23.

Assistance Program Raises Nearly $20,000

The St. Bonaventure Department of Athletics, in conjunction with University Ministries, has collected nearly $20,000 as part of the Wilson Family Assistance Program for freshman women's basketball player Tatiana Wilson.

University officials established the fund last month to help Wilson's family, whose house in Far Rockaway, Queens, was destroyed by fire early in the morning Dec. 13.

University Ministries accepted almost $19,000 in cash and checks and nearly $1,000 in gift cards. Additionally, 15 large boxes containing clothes, toiletries and other supplies were donated to the family.

"I want to thank the St. Bonaventure University and Olean communities from the bottom of my heart for all their support and contributions to our family over the past month," Temeka Wilson, Tatiana's mother, said. "Our family is very blessed to be alive, and the generosity and kindness of those who helped outside of western New York is also very much appreciated. We are extremely grateful for all donations, phone calls and well-wishes that were made, and I just want to say 'thank you' one more time."

Wilson's mother and five younger siblings jumped from their second-story home into the arms of New York City Sanitation Department workers, who saw the flames from a distance and called 911. Temeka broke her back while trying to escape, sister Amari, 12, suffered a broken leg and sister Shaina, 17, suffered third-degree burns. The family lost everything in the fire.

Bona Women Just Miss Getting Into AP Top 25

The 18-2 St. Bonaventure women's basketball team just missed cracking the top-25 in the Associated Press Poll Monday for the first time in program history, checking in as the No. 27 team in the nation with 42 votes.

The Bonnies – who sit atop the Atlantic 10 standings as the lone unbeaten team at 5-0 – were just five votes shy of No. 25 North Carolina, which garnered 47 votes. Georgia Tech claimed 46 votes for the No. 26 slot.

The 42 votes are more than triple Bonaventure's previous high, which was 13 on Dec. 15, 2009. This is the latest in a season the Bonnies have ever been receiving votes, and is the third-straight week and record fifth time this campaign.

St. Bonaventure erased a 13-point second-half deficit in snapping Charlotte's six-game winning streak on Saturday evening to continue its best-ever start to season. In that contest, senior Jessica Jenkins broke the A-10 record for career 3-pointers as she now owns 293 makes.

SBU has won seven straight games – the second seven-game winning streak of the season already, and its 8-0 road record is the best in the nation. The win over Charlotte was the third victory over a team picked ahead of Bonaventure in the preseason A-10 poll.

Bonaventure's difficult conference-opening slate continues as it returns home to the Reilly Center to host Saint Joseph's on Wednesday. The Hawks (13-5 overall, 3-1 A-10) were picked to finish 5th in the league in preseason voting. Baily's Beads to be Unveiled Wednesday

The staff of Baily’s Beads will unveil the 2012 magazine at a celebration Jan. 25 in Mukaiyama University Room of the Frame-Westerberg Commons at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.

The event, which begins at 7:30 p.m., will include refreshments, readings and an open mic for those wishing to share their original work. The staff will also present awards for the best writing in the magazine. The free event is part of the university’s Spectrum Series.

Co-editors for the 2012 edition of Pitt-Bradford’s literary magazine were Seth Cheatle, an English major from St. Marys, and James Segee, a writing major from Bradford.

Advisor Dr. Nancy McCabe, director of the writing program, said that this year’s staff had some additional challenges to overcome due to rising printing costs and a constricted budget.

“The staff and I challenged ourselves to produce a high quality, low-budget magazine, which meant that we couldn’t do as much with color or design as we have in the past, but we didn’t scale back on the quality of writing that we chose,” she said.

“Rick Minard (visiting assistant professor of art) and some art students pitched in to help us with the cover and design, and the editorial staff ended up being one of the best I’ve ever worked with.”

The 2011 edition of the magazine was recently chosen the Most Outstanding Literary Magazine for 2011 by the American Scholastic Press Association.

Also, work has begun on the 2013 issue. The staff of the 2013 Baily’s Beads will read submissions of poetry, short stories, novel excerpts, memoir, travel writing, personal essays, plays and translations through March 30.

Work should have a cover sheet with the author’s name, address, phone number, email address and the title and genre of the work. The author’s name should not appear anywhere else on the manuscript.

Poetry should be single-spaced, while prose should be double-spaced. Writers may submit up to 20 pages. Electronic submissions made to bailys@pitt.edu are preferred. Submissions may also be dropped off at 103 Blaisdell Hall or mailed to Baily’s Beads, 300 Campus Drive, Bradford, Pa. 16701.

The family of Joe Paterno has announced funeral arrangements for the former Penn State football coach, who died Sunday morning.

A public viewing will be held from 1 to 11 p.m. Tuesday at the Pasquerilla Spiritual Center on Penn State's University Park campus. A second public viewing is scheduled for 8 a.m. to noon Wednesday at the Pasquerilla Spiritual Center, with a private family funeral service also on Wednesday.

A public memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Bryce Jordan Center.

SBU's Jenkins is A-10 Player of the Week

Following a week in which she broke the Atlantic 10 Conference record for career 3-pointers made, St. Bonaventure senior Jessica Jenkins has been named the A-10 Player of the Week for Monday, Jan. 23.

Jenkins knocked down six 3-pointers in a winning effort at Charlotte Saturday night, the fifth one surpassing the record mark of 291. The Ohio native now has 293 career 3's, besting previous record holders Suzie Dailer (St. Bona '95) and George Washington's Cathy Jones. Among active players, she owns the second-most 3-pointers in the entire nation.

The guard averaged 20.5 points, including 10 3-pointers, over SBU's two games last week. She finished with a game-high 23 points against the 49ers, helping the Bonnies erase a 13-point second-half deficit to move into sole possession of first place in the league. She started the week with a team-best 18 points, including four 3's, in Bonaventure's 75-59 win against Richmond. Also against the Spiders, she pulled down four rebounds – one shy of tying her career high in that category.

Since the start of her sophomore season, Jenkins has knocked down five or more 3-pointers in a game 21 times. She's also knocked down 22 consecutive free throws, and is connecting from the stripe at a 96-percent clip (42-44).

The Brown and White is off to a program-best 18-2 start and is the lone undefeated team in the A-10 at 5-0. The Bonnies have won seven straight games – the second seven-game winning streak of the season already, and its 8-0 road record is the best in the entire nation.

Rapp Advances Women’s Right-to-Know Act to Offer Complete Picture of Life

HARRISBURG – Adding another tangible legislative action item to today’s national March for Life and the anniversary of Roe versus Wade, Rep. Kathy Rapp (R-Warren/Forest/McKean) hosted a state Capitol press conference to build momentum for passage of her Women’s Right-to-Know Act (House Bill 1077).

“Today on the anniversary of Roe V. Wade, hopefully we can all agree that abortion is a serious decision with irreversible and lasting consequences,” said Rapp. “I’m introducing this legislation because every woman deserves the right to be fully informed when considering the termination of her pregnancy. This without question includes the right to choose whether or not to view an ultrasound of her child within 24 hours of undergoing an abortion.”

Already receiving the bipartisan support of approximately 113 legislative co-sponsors, the Women’s Right-to-Know Act will provide:

An opportunity for every pregnant woman in Pennsylvania seeking an abortion to view and receive a printed copy of the ultrasound image of her unborn child.

That all questions a woman has as a result of the ultrasound, including gestational age and general developmental health of her unborn child, be answered fully and completely.

The guidelines to be followed in providing this information to women.

Minimum standards for those who are qualified to perform these ultrasounds.

“Pre-dating Roe versus Wade, ultrasounds have been used safely in medicine for 50 years and are already standard practice in abortion clinics that use this technology to determine the total cost of every abortion procedure,” said Rapp. “My legislation will bring current law up to speed with the latest medical technology by requiring the abortion facility to turn the ultrasound machine around and share this living, moving information upon request of the woman who is carrying the child.”

Following similar legislation in more than 20 other states, House Bill 1077 does not require the woman to view the ultrasound. Additionally, the ultrasound would be waived in the event of a medical emergency.

“Women cannot get this type of knowledge from a pamphlet or medical office phone call,” said Rapp. “These images capture a living, kicking and moving person with a heartbeat. Ultrasounds dispel the myth that abortion is only about removing a ‘clump of cells’ and that information in itself is absolutely critical to every mother’s ability to make a fully informed decision.”

House Bill 1077 is expected to be considered by the House Health Committee in the near future.

“The Women’s Right-to-Know Act simply puts into legislative statute a standard of care that every woman should expect in order to be fully informed about the risks and complications associated with abortion,” said Rapp. “What expecting mother do you know who has not received an ultrasound image of her baby? Women in perhaps their greatest moment of need and indecision should not be denied the same quality of medical care. House Bill 1077 will protect life, not only the lives of the unborn, but just as importantly, the life of the mother.”

Hammer Attack at Hotel Holley

A Buffalo man was seriously injured Sunday morning after being hit numerous times with, what Bradford City Police described as, a “hammer-like instrument” at the Hotel Holley.

56-year-old James White had been hit 18 times, and was unresponsive when he was found in his room. White was flown to UPMC Hamot for treatment.

After speaking with witnesses and concerned citizens police found 19-year-old Larry Shroyer Jr. at a house on Bank Street and charged with aggravated assault and related offenses. After his arraignment he was sent to jail on $100,000 bail.

Man Arrested for Triple Stabbing

A Jamestown man is in custody after allegedly stabbing three people outside the Dugout Sports Bar in Olean early Saturday morning.

Police have arrested 23-year-old Emanuel Mendez Ortiz.

One of the victims was taken to ECMC, but police say none of the injuries are considered life threatening.

Man Accused of Killing Cat with Log

A Chautauqua County man is accused of killing a cat by hitting it over the head with a log.

State Police first went to a house in North Harmony after getting a report that 34-year-old Gregg Morrison of Ashville had strangled a cat.

During their investigation troopers leaarned that Morrison hit the cat with the log. Morrison is charged with killing an animal and is scheduled to appear in Town of North Harmony Court later this month.

Man Charged After Being Told He Was Too Drunk to Drive From Casino

A Titusville man was charged with disorderly conduct after a security guard at the Seneca Allegany Casino, and sheriff’s deputies, told him he was too drunk to drive.

37-year-old Samuel Roberts III and his girlfriend were in the front lobby of the casino at around 3:45 a.m. Wednesday when authorities told them they couldn’t drive.

Roberts allegedly used obscene and abusive language, even after being warned to calm down. He was taken to the Salamanca Police Department and held pending arraignment

It is with great sadness that we announce that Joe Paterno passed away earlier today. His loss leaves a void in our lives that will never be filled.

He died as he lived. He fought hard until the end, stayed positive, thought only of others and constantly reminded everyone of how blessed his life had been. His ambitions were far reaching, but he never believed he had to leave this Happy Valley to achieve them. He was a man devoted to his family, his university, his players and his community.

He has been many things in his life — a soldier, scholar, mentor, coach, friend and father. To my mother he was and is her soul mate, and the last several weeks have shown the strength of their love. To his children and grandchildren he is a shining example of how to live a good, decent and honest life, a standard to which we aspire.

When he decided to forego a career in law and make coaching his vocation, his father Angelo had but one command: Make an impact.

As the last 61 years have shown, Joe made an incredible impact. That impact has been felt and appreciated by our family in the form of thousands of letters and well wishes along with countless acts of kindness from people whose lives he touched. It is evident also in the thousands of successful student athletes who have gone on to multiply that impact as they spread out across the country.

And so he leaves us with a peaceful mind, comforted by his "living legacy" of five kids, 17 grandchildren, and hundreds of young men whose lives he changed in more ways than can begin to be counted.

Fatal Crash in Chautauqua County

UPDATE: The man who died is Harry Loomis of Cherry Creek.

An 83-year-old Chautauqua County resident is dead after being thrown from a vehicle during a crash Friday night on Route 5.

The victim’s name has not been released yet.

Sheriff’s deputies say 31-year-old Jason Gage of Buffalo was driving a tractor-trailer in the Town of Pomfret when the victim pulled out in front of him. Gage’s rig hit the victim’s vehicle, which then spun out and landed in a ditch.

The victim was taken to Brooks Memorial Hospital, where the person later died. Deputies issued Gage a ticket for having a suspended registration.

The investigation is continuing.

Jury Acquits Olean Man on Assault Charge

Little Valley, NY - A Cattaraugus County Jury today of six women and six men found Michael J. Ward of South Barry Street, Olean, NY, not guilty of one count of felony assault 2nd and guilty of one count of a violation for unlawfully possessing marijuana.

It was alleged that Mr. Ward, age 23, had assaulted his former girlfriend in the residence they shared at 1309 Washington Street in Olean on June 15th of last year. Mr. Ward was arrested based upon a complaint from the former girlfriend, Jenny E. Stephens, 28, now of Batavia, which was made to Olean City Police on August 5, 2011. Mr. Ward was found to have a small amount of marijuana in his pants pocket when he was arrested later that day.

The jury deliberated for approximately one hour before announcing their verdict. The four day trial was presided over by Cattaraugus County Judge Larry M. Himelein. It was Judge Himelein’s first trial since returning to work after an extended medical leave.

Mr. Ward, represented by Cattaraugus County Public Defender Mark S. Williams, broke out in tears as the verdict was announced on the assault charge, which, had he been convicted of, would have resulted in a mandatory prison sentence of up to seven years. He had attempted to enter a guilty plea to the marijuana possession charge as the trial resumed today but was rebuffed by prosecutor John Luzier, First Assistant District Attorney of Cattaraugus County. Mr. Ward had conceded his guilt on that charge during earlier testimony from Olean Police Captain Robert Blovsky. Mr. Ward had maintained his innocence on the assault charge from the day of his arrest. Medical records from Ms. Stephens’ stay in Olean General Hospital indicated that she had on numerous occasions told medical personnel that she had tripped and fallen into the corner of a kitchen counter at their residence and was injured. However, Ms. Stephens later changed her story and indicated to her doctor fourteen days later that she had been kicked by Mr. Ward on June 15th. On August 5th, when she first went to the police to file a report, she claimed she had been punched by Mr. Ward on June 15th and had been a victim of domestic violence.

Mr. Ward testified in his own defense at the trial and also presented the testimony of his current girlfriend, Samantha Cooper of Olean. Mr. Ward’s attorney, Public Defender Mark S. Williams stated “We are very pleased by the verdict. There was next to no investigation of this complaint by the authorities. When my investigator tried to interview witnesses and the alleged victim, doors were literally slammed in our face.” Testimony in court on Thursday by Ms. Stephens indicated that she was told by prosecutor John Luzier to not talk to the defense attorney or his investigator. “It really makes our job that much harder when no one will talk to us about a case proceeding to trial. When we learn that it is the prosecution that has told them to not talk to us, it is outrageous,” said Williams.

In her testimony, Ms. Stephens revealed that her eight year old son was present when the alleged assault took place. “This information was not in any police investigation, statement of Ms. Stephens, nor in any medical records. It is unbelievable that a witness to an alleged assault is not interviewed by the police. It is even more unbelievable that it appears that until Ms. Stephens testified that no one, including the prosecutor, was aware of that fact” stated Williams. “While we presented a very logical argument at trial that Michael Ward was not guilty of the charge and, in fact, had not assaulted Ms. Stephens, the criminal justice system is shown to be unfair and unjust when a crucial eyewitness is never revealed until the middle of a trial and is never interviewed. We are ever thankful that our jury system is there to force the police and prosecutors to go back and see what they can do better in the next investigation. Unfortunately, all too often the result is a disgruntled prosecutor who thinks the jury just got it wrong. The truth is, the jury got this verdict correct and an innocent man will not be going to prison,” Williams concluded.

Dozens of Accidents in Twin Tiers

More a dozen accidents were reported across the Twin Tiers this afternoon.

At just after 3 o’clock a pickup truck traveling on Route 219 went off the road just north of Tack’s Inn and rolled over an embankment. The driver was able to get himself out of the vehicle.

A couple of minutes later Bradford City Police were called to an accident at the intersection of Mill and East Main streets.

At around 2:40 emergency responders were called to a crash just west of the cemetery curve on Route 6. One person was hurt, but a helicopter could not respond because of the weather.

Several accidents were reported on I-86, including one where a driver hit a couple of road signs. Other motorists got stuck on the side of the road.

On Humphrey Road a car crashed into a utility pole and flipped over.

At just after 4 o’clock a vehicle crashed into a bus near Hinsdale. No injuries were reported. And, there was a rollover crash on the Portville-Ceres Road.

At just before 5 o’clock a car ran into a utility pole at the M&M Smoke Shop. At just after 5 o’clock a car went into a ditch on South Kendall Avenue near The Kitchen. No injuries were reported.

Also, fire police were called to Red Rock Hill in Otto Township twice when tractor-trailers got stuck on the road.

PA Jobless Rate Falls

Pennsylvania’s jobless rate dropped to 7.6 percent in December, from 7.9 percent in November.

The state’s unemployment rate is now nine-tenths of a percentage point lower than the national rate of 8.5 percent.

In its report released today, the Department of Labor and Industry says the falling unemployment means two things: some people found work; others stopped looking.

11,000 more people were working in December than in November.

EPA to Sample Water at Homes in Dimock

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced today that it plans to perform water sampling at approximately 60 homes in the Carter Road/Meshoppen Creek Road area of Dimock, Pa. to further assess whether any residents are being exposed to hazardous substances that cause health concerns. EPA’s decision to conduct sampling is based on EPA’s review of data provided by residents, Cabot Oil and Gas, and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.

“EPA is working diligently to understand the situation in Dimock and address residents’ concerns,” said EPA Regional Administrator Shawn M. Garvin. “We believe that the information provided to us by the residents deserves further review, and conducting our own sampling will help us fill information gaps. Our actions will be based on the science and the law and we will work to help get a more complete picture of water quality for these homes in Dimock.”

The sampling will begin in a matter of days and the agency estimates that it will take at least three weeks to sample all the homes. All sampling is contingent on access granted to the property. EPA expects validated results from quality-tested lab to be available in about five weeks after samples are taken.

In addition, EPA is taking action to ensure delivery of temporary water supplies to four homes where data reviewed by EPA indicates that residents’ well water contains levels of contaminants that pose a health concern. EPA will reevaluate this decision when it completes sampling of the wells at these four homes. Current information on other wells does not support the need for alternative water at this time. However, the information does support the need for further sampling.

Natural gas plays a key role in our nation’s clean energy future and the Obama Administration is committed to ensuring that the development of this vital resource occurs safely and responsibly. At the direction of Congress, and separate from this limited sampling, EPA has begun a national study on the potential impacts of hydraulic fracturing on drinking water resources.

Local Blood Shortage Worsens;Part of Nationwide Shortage

The blood shortage that developed in the region worsened with continued heavier than normal usage and lighter than anticipated donor turnout the two contributing factors. Much of the nation is experiencing the same problem so the blood bank won't be able to borrow blood in the event the situation becomes critical. Local donors are needed to end this shortage.

In the past the Community Blood Bank has been able to buy blood from other blood banks to help end shortages. The Community Blood Bank has also sold blood to other blood banks in the same predicament.

The Community Blood Bank is holding a blood drive on Saturday at 24 Davis Street, Union Square in Bradford from 9-1pm. No appointment is needed to save a life.

"Looks like we will really be struggling," says Dan Desrochers Director of Marketing at the Community Blood Bank. "And with this being a nationwide shortage we are on our own."

All donors are strongly encouraged to donate. The Community Blood Bank is located at 24 Davis Street in Union Square across from the Sports Café in the BRMC Laboratory. Hours are on Saturdays 9am to 1pm. No appointment is necessary. Photo ID is required.

SBU Gets $1 Million Gift for Construction of New School of Business Building

Devoted to creating opportunities for students and focused on the needs of the university, Daria L. Foster has committed $2 million to St. Bonaventure University’s School of Business Campaign, the university announced today. Daria Foster is managing partner of Lord, Abbett & Co. LLC.

The contribution will provide $1 million toward the construction of a new building to house the School of Business and $1 million in endowment to support academic programs.

The gift honors her late husband of more than 30 years, William C. Foster. A member of St. Bonaventure’s class of 1962 and Fordham Law School (’65), Mr. Foster practiced law for 35 years, retiring in 2000 as senior associate counsel for Champion International. He served on St. Bonaventure’s Board of Trustees from 2008 to his passing in 2010. In 2009, the Fosters endowed a scholarship at the university in honor of their mothers, which is now valued at more than $2.7 million, and in early 2011 Mrs. Foster created a similar scholarship fund at Gettysburg College.

“Daria Foster is a great champion of students and of a liberal arts foundation,” said Sr. Margaret Carney, O.S.F., S.T.D., president of the university. “She and Bill shared a devotion to giving back to their alma maters and helping future generations pursue their full potential. Her tremendous generosity in this campaign illustrates a firm belief in St. Bonaventure’s ability to transform how business professionals are prepared.”

Mrs. Foster has more than 30 years’ experience in the financial services industry. She is the first female managing partner of Lord, Abbett & Co. LLC, one of our nation’s oldest money management firms, and also serves as president and director of Lord Abbett Mutual Funds. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Gettysburg College and credits much of her success to the varied skill set gleaned in a liberal arts environment.

“St. Bonaventure meant a lot to Bill. It was where he truly matured as an adult. He always had a very warm feeling about the university and wanted to do something that was important,” said Mrs. Foster. “In addition, we have both been the beneficiaries of the generosity of family members, friends and colleagues throughout our lives. This gift also acknowledges these people for their support of us.”

Constructing a new home for the School of Business is important, she said, adding that a new physical plant will affect students’ involvement and interest, and will offer opportunities they would not otherwise have.

“It is my hope that Daria Foster’s leadership in giving will inspire many others to join in supporting the School of Business Campaign,” said Carol Fischer, Ph.D., C.P.A., interim dean of the School of Business. “Her generosity is a remarkable vote of confidence in the work of our faculty and the aspirations of our students.”

The university is in the midst of a $15 million campaign for the creation of a new building to house the School of Business: $10 million for the construction of the business center; $4 million in endowments for faculty and programmatic support; and $1 million for building endowment.

Daria Foster’s gift brings the total of funds raised to nearly $13 million. It is among more than 50 commitments made to the campaign by St. Bonaventure alumni and friends. The university will release information about additional lead donors to the campaign as it continues toward its goal of $15 million.

Winter Weather Advisory

A Winter Weather Advisory is effect until midnight for McKean, Warren, Elk and Potter counties, and until 5 a.m. Friday in Cattaraugus and Chautauqua counties.

The National Weather Service in State College says we could see 2 to 4 inches of snow before midnight, and wind gusts could be as high as 30 miles an hour.

The National Weather Service in Buffalo says some areas in Western New York could see up to 9 inches of snow by tomorrow morning.

A Winter Weather Advisory means that periods of snow will cause travel difficulties, and motorists should be prepared for snow-covered roads and limited visibility. Motorists should be especially cautious on bridges and overpasses, where slippery spots develop first.

Man Dies in Franklinville Crash

UPDATE: The man who died is Barry Tyler

An Olean man is dead following a bus accident Wednesday afternoon on Mount Pleasant Avenue in Franklinville.

State Police say the 50-year-old bus driver, whose name has not been released yet, had seven disabled adults on the bus when it went off the road and hit a tree.

The driver was taken to Olean General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police say the man may have suffered a medical problem before the crash.

One of the passengers was also taken to Olean General Hospital for treatment of a minor knee injury.
