Tractor Trailer Crash Closes Route 6

A tractor trailer crash spilled diesel fuel on Route 6 in Liberty Township, closing the road between Port Allegany and Smethport for several hours.

Police say the tractor-trailer driven by 44-year-old Stephen Smith of Port Allegany was traveling east near Mountain Road when a westbound truck driven by 52-year-old Eric Johnston of Port Allegany stalled while trying to make a left turn into a driveway. Three other vehicles stopped for the stalled truck.

When the tractor-trailer crested the hill Smith saw the stopped vehicles, and veered right to avoid a crash, but hit a rock embankment that caused the rig to jackknife and slide across both lanes, and ruptured the saddle fuel tank.

No one was hurt. The McKean County Emergency Management Agency, state DEP and PennDOT were all on the scene. Port Allegany’s Star Hose Company and Smethport Fire Department were on the scene as well. The tractor trailer was towed by Portville Trucking and Rigging Company.
