SBU to Welcome 400 for
Annual National Girls, Women in Sports Day

By Kiara Catanzaro SBU ’15 St. Bonaventure University will host its 28th annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 29. Local high school girls and their coaches will participate in sporting event programs throughout the day with St. Bonaventure’s female student-athletes and staff. The event, sponsored by the School of Education, the Department of Physical Education, the Department of Athletics, the Department of Military Science and the Visiting Scholars Program, will host 15 school districts including 400 women student-athletes along with their coaches and teachers. Students from the following school districts will attend: Allegany-Limestone, Archbishop Walsh, Austin Area Schools, Bath, Bolivar-Richburg, Bradford, Cuba-Rushford, Fillmore, Franklinville, Jamestown-Lutheran, Portville, Randolph, Seneca Nation, South Park and Southwestern. Olean Student to Perform in Nashville

OLEAN, NY — Clarice Ambroselli, a senior from Archbishop Walsh Academy has been selected as a member of the 2013 NAfME All-National Honor Choir sponsored by the National Association for Music Education (NAfME). Miss Ambroselli will join more than 670 of the most musically talented and skilled high school students in the United States to perform at a gala concert on October 30, 2013 in Nashville, Tennessee. Miss Ambroselli is 1of 49 first sopranos in the United States, and 1 of 2 first sopranos from New York State. To earn this honor, she was selected to attend the NYSSMA (New York State School Music Association) Area All State Choir, made up of vocalists from 6 counties of NY, the NYSSMA All- State Conference Choir made up of vocalists from the whole state, and the NAFME All Eastern Choir made up of vocalists from the 13 states of the Eastern Sea Board of the US. Olean Schools Go 'Back to the '80s'

Thursday was the Southern Tier Catholic School and Archbishop Walsh Academy Spring Concert, called “Back to the 80s: Livin’ on a Prayer”. All students dressed in 80’s garb, and many parents dressed up as well. The concert included students from Montessori pre-school through 12th grade. Song selections included “Eye of the Tiger” (Survivior) for the Montessori and Kindergarten chorus, “99 Red Balloons” (Neno) for the 1st and 2nd grade chorus,, an “Awesome 80’s Medley for the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade chorus, “Take My Breath Away” (Berlin) for the older students, and the grand finale Livin’ On A Prayer (Bon Jovi), performed by the entire school. The grand finale included silly string shooting into the air and covering the music teacher and chorus director, Mr. Chris Dockey. Other features included teachers dressed and dancing in 80’s costumes, and the school boys basketball team dressed in “Thriller” costumes with a star appearance from “Michael Jackson”. New Position at Archbishop Walsh

Olean, NY -- Archbishop Walsh Academy and Southern Tier Catholic School are pleased to announce the appointment of Leslie Raymore-Watson, Ph.D., to the newly created position of College Admissions Counselor. In this role, Dr. Watson will report to the principal of the schools, Mykal Karl. According to Mrs. Karl, this is “a new position and separate from the role of guidance counselor. This role was created to focus entirely on helping students at a much earlier age think about the type of college they are interested in attending and the preparations necessary for this process.” Mrs. Karl further comments, “Leslie will maximize the students’ possibilities in college choice by examining more challenging colleges and universities as well as performing a more extensive examination of scholarships and academic awards.” In this position, Dr. Watson will work with students beginning in the 8th grade, with a planned approach for parents and students in each year of their high school caree...
