More students than ever before want to live on campus this fall at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. With the addition this fall of Lester and Barbara Rice House, which can house109 students, Pitt-Bradford now can accommodate 1,028 students on campus. However, there are around 20 additional students who want to live on campus this fall. Instead of turning those students away, university officials have partnered with the Best Western to provide rooms so all of those students who want housing will be accommodated. “We are pleased that so many more students want to live on campus,” said Dr. Livingston Alexander, Pitt-Bradford’s president. “We attribute that increased desire, in part, to our comfortable residence halls and the vibrant campus life we offer our students. Staff at Bradford Regional Medical Center, along with a city police officer, were threatened last night by a woman whose blood alcohol content was nearly 4 times the legal limit. Police say they went to the Tops parking lot at about 11:45 last night to assist city ambulance personnel and soon determined that Tanya Cornelius of Concord, North Carolina, who will turn 40 on Monday, had been involved in an accident in the Best Western parking lot, where she allegedly hit a parked tractor trailer hauling a car carrier. They say they followed the damage trail to her car in the Tops lot. Police also determined Cornelius was drunk and, when she was in the lab at BRMC for testing, she told police to kill her and attempted to slam her head through a large glass window. She was later taken to the emergency room, where she attempted to kick the nursing supervisor in the head, and made the threats, according to papers filed in District Judge Dominic Cercone’s office. With the second-largest freshman class ever enrolling at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford this fall, the university will once again house some of its students for the fall term at the Best Western Bradford Inn. About 50 upperclass students with confirmed spaces on campus were given the option to switch to the Best Western, where they will be able to ride the Area Transportation Authority bus service to campus and eat at the hotel’s continental breakfast each morning. The students were offered an incentive in the form of a $500 on-campus credit for use toward books, supplies and food on campus. The purpose of the incentive is to create more bed space on campus in order to continue the tradition of having all freshmen live on campus. This is not the first time that Pitt-Bradford has used the Best Western to accommodate some of its students, having used blocks of rooms in 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10.
