Local School Districts Get State Grant Money

Seven schools in the 25th Senatorial District have been selected by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) to receive Pennsylvania school safety grants, according to Senator Joe Scarnati (R-Jefferson). The grants being awarded today are for the Safe School Initiatives Program. The funding will be used by educational institutions to establish and implement plans to prevent and reduce incidents of violence. Each of the schools selected in the 25th Senatorial District will receive the maximum grant award of $25,000. “Ensuring that students and teachers feel safe in their learning environments is a crucial part of helping children to learn and succeed,” Scarnati stated. “I am very pleased that seven area schools have been selected to receive this grant funding. Area Water Companies Get Money

Two facilities in the 25th Senatorial District have been awarded a total of $3.145 million in low-interest loans to make major improvements to their water systems, according to Senator Joe Scarnati (R-25). Scarnati said the loans were awarded through the state’s PENNVEST Program. The Emporium Water Company in Emporium, Cameron County, and the Huston Township Water Authority in Penfield, Clearfield County were selected to receive the funding. Emporium Water Company will utilize its $2.5 million loan to complete updates, including installation of a 10,000 gallon finished water tank, pump station and waterline in the Sylvan Heights area. A 500,000 gallon finished water tank and transmission will also be constructed near Britton Road in Shippen Township. The project includes rehabilitation of the Wheaton tank and system-wide upgrades as well. Art Competition Winner Announced

St. Marys student places third Washington, D.C. — Kristen Henderlong of Clearfield Area High School, Clearfield, Pa., has won the Fifth Congressional District’s 2012 High School Art Competition, which was sponsored by U.S. Representative Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson, R-Howard. Henderlong won the contest with her work, “The Essence of Light,” an acrylic-on-canvas painting of a classroom in Haiti where she had traveled to on a humanitarian mission. “Kristen is a tremendously talented artist and I look forward to showcasing her work in the halls of Congress before the hundreds of daily visitors to the U.S. Capitol,” said Representative Thompson. “I want to thank each of the winners and all of the participants for their hard work, as well as their friends, teachers and families for supporting these young artists and making this another successful competition.” The contestants and winning entries were recognized Thursday, May 3, 2012 at the Winkler Gallery in DuBois, Pa. BASD Gets Grant Money

Six area school districts will share nearly $3 million in federal grants to promote literacy efforts.
