Guth Named DEP Northwest Regional Director

Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Secretary E. Christopher Abruzzo announced today that John Guth, Environmental Program Manager for Air Quality, has been named regional director of the agency’s Northwest office effective today. “John’s strong background working with the regulated community, coordinating with local governments, directing and managing staff and serving with the region’s emergency response team has more than prepared him for his new role as regional director,” Abruzzo said. “His vast experience and dedication to the department’s important mission has earned him respect both inside and outside DEP. I am confident that he will continue to serve with diligence.” Guth began his career at DEP conducting field investigations for the Waste Management Program in 1985, and was promoted to Solid Waste Supervisor in 1993 to supervise employees conducting municipal, residual and hazardous waste inspections, compliance assistance and enforcement. Lawrence County Eagle Placed Back In Nest

FRANKLIN -- Northwest Region Director Keith Harbaugh announced today that PA Game Commission personnel successfully placed a young bald eagle back in its nest this past Friday. Local citizens contacted the Northwest Region Office on May 22nd advising that a young eagle was out of the nest and on the ground. Wildlife Conservation Officer Lawrence Hergenroeder along with Deputy Wildlife Conservation Officer Ron Richman responded to the incident and retrieved and transported the bird to Skye’s Spirit Rehabilitation Center in Harrisville, PA. The bird was evaluated and spent several days rehabilitating prior to the release. Local Lawrence County WCO Byron Gibbs made contact with the Ellwood City fire department to assist. The Fire Department evaluated the scene and determined that they could use a fire truck with a 100 foot boom to facilitate the release. Homicide Charges Bound to Court

The man accused of fatally stabbing his former fiancé and her boyfriend is headed to court. Two counts each of homicide and aggravated assault against 38-year-old Scott Black of Butler were bound to court following a preliminary hearing in front of District Judge George Gregory in Forest County. Police say Black killed 42-year-old Marcelle Edwards of Tionesta and 43-year-old Donald Shay of Leechburg back in April. He was arrested several hours after the bodies were discovered, and he had bloodstains on his clothes and a number of minor injuries. Black remains in the Warren County Jail without bail. Guilty Plea for Fatal Domestic Dispute

A Butler woman whose husband was shot and killed during a domestic dispute at their camp in Tionesta has pleaded guilty. 58-year-old Ruth Angert pleaded guilty to attempted aggravated assault and involuntary manslaughter for the November 17 death of 68-year-old Larry Angert. She is scheduled for sentencing June 21 in Forest County. Courts records say the Angerts were arguing after arriving at the hunting camp, and he pushed her to the floor and grabbed her neck. Mary Jo White Will Not Seek Re-Election

Senator Mary Jo White has decided she will not seek re-election in 2012. White was first elected to the Senate in 1996 and has served Clarion, Forest and Venango counties as well as parts of Warren, Butler and Erie counties. She is currently chairman of the Senate Environmental Resources and Energy Committee. She also serves on the state Environmental Quality Board. She is on the Center for Rural Health Practice Advisory Board and is a Commonwealth Trustee of the University of Pittsburgh.
