Rapp: Gas-Tax-Propelled Transportation Plan
Too Much for Rural PA Residents to Bear

Image
HARRISBURG (News Release) — After casting her fourth "no" vote in less than a week, Rep. Kathy Rapp (R-Warren/Forest/McKean) issued the following statement regarding Thursday evening’s final passage of a transportation funding plan that contains a $2.3 billion increase in gas taxes and fees on Pennsylvania drivers: “There is no excuse to impose an additional $2.3 billion gas tax and fee increase on Pennsylvania motorists when we already spend close to $7 billion annually on transportation. My constituents view this transportation plan which is now awaiting the governor’s signature as more money they are going to have pay to fuel and maintain their vehicles to subsidize mass transit for Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. “Any additional revenue that comes out of this transportation funding plan comes at the full expense and burden of Pennsylvania motorists. While I agree with the governor that funding and maintaining our infrastructure is a core function of governm...

'In God We Trust'
Should It Be Displayed in Schools?

Image
Dozens of grassroots organizers and concerned citizens joined in a rally in the state Capitol today to urge passage of legislation calling for the public display of the official national motto “In God We Trust.” Rep. Kathy Rapp said the legislation calling for the public posting of the motto in school buildings throughout the Commonwealth serves as an educational aid to remind students about the underlying values held by the nation’s founders. “In God We Trust” was officially adopted as the national motto in 1956, and appeared on US currency as early as 1864. Thompson Calls on President, Senate to
Enact Commonsense Deficit Reduction Measure

Image
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Representative Glenn 'GT' Thompson, R-Howard, today released the following statement regarding legislation passed by the U.S. House of Representatives to replace sequestration and calling on the Senate to take action before March 1, 2013, when the indiscriminate, across-the-board cuts go into effect. "It has been almost 300 days since the House first acted to replace sequestration with targeted reforms that achieve an equivalent level of deficit reduction,” stated Rep. Thompson. “With just 3 days left until the sequester goes into effect, the Democrat-controlled Senate has still failed to pass a replacement bill and the President has offered neither a constructive plan forward nor the necessary leadership to prod the Senate into action.” Thompson voted to support the Spending Reduction Act of 2012 (H.R. 6684), which passed the House in December 2012. Additionally, the House passed the Sequestration Replacement and Reconciliation Act in ...

$300,000 Goal Hit to Build
New Bonnies Women's Locker Room

Image
Fundraising has been completed to build a new women’s basketball locker room at St. Bonaventure University. Spurred by a $75,000 gift from John H. Meisch, class of 1958, and his wife, Kay, donors contributed a total of $300,000 for the project. Work will begin shortly after Commencement in May and is expected to be completed before the end of summer, in time for the 2013-14 season. The locker room will be located across the hall from the men’s basketball locker room, inside the tunnel that faces the team benches. The facility includes a 15-stall locker room; smart board and large-screen TV for film study and game planning; team meeting room, including computer stations; and a modern shower and bathroom facility. In total, it will encompass 1,740 square feet. The gifts were a tribute to head coach Jim Crowley and last season’s nationally ranked Bonnies (31-4), who went unbeaten in the Atlantic 10 and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. “I can’t say...

'Saving Lincoln'

Image
I wanted to pass this along from our buddy Lew Temple. He plays Montgomery Blair, the first Post Master General, who sat on Lincoln's cabinet, and was also the Great Grandfather of actor, Montgomery Clift. The movie is only in limited release, and the closest it will be to Bradford is NYC, but he hopes if we ever do get a chance to see it, that we do. Lew would also like to thank fans of "The Walking Dead" for continuing to watch. The news leader of the Twin Tiers ... since 1947

'Boom' Mystery Solved

Image
Police think they have solved the mystery of the loud boom in Chautauqua County on Sunday evening. They say a 20-year-old man was in a ravine in Busti when he mixed three six-pound boxes of Tannerite together and shot it with a rifle, which caused the explosion. Tannerite is used by shooting clubs to provide explosions for their participants in large-scale weaponry demonstrations or other events. The recommended amount to use during target practice is half a pound. No charges have been filed against the 20-year-old. Teens Charged After Assault Turns Up on YouTube

Image
Two Warren County teenagers are facing charges after a video of an assault on another teen turned up on YouTube. State troopers say a 16-year-old and a 17-year-old conspired to attack the other teen on a walking path leading to Warren Area High School. They say the video shows the two talking and smoking right before the assault on Tuesday. Police say one of the teens charged the victim as he approached them, and then grabbed a girl who tried to stop the attack and pushed her aside. He then punched the victim in the head and neck. The victim was knocked to the ground and hit several more times, but was not seriously hurt. The 16- and 17-year-old will be charged with simple assault and conspiracy.
