Tanker Crashes Near Kinzua Dam

UPDATE: 3:30 PM -- Route 59 has re-opened. UPDATE: PennDOT says the road will be closed at least until "early evening." They have posted detours using US Route 6 and Route 321. A tanker carrying diesel fuel crashed on Route 59 just east of Wolf Run Marina this morning. The driver was able to get out safely, with only minor injuries, but the tank is leaking. State police say they expect to keep one lane of the road open. The news leader of the Twin Tiers ... since 1947

No One Hurt in Head-On Crash

Neither driver was hurt during a head-on collision on Route 59 Monday night. Police say 82-year-old Philip Gough of Rochester Hills, Michigan, was traveling west near the Keenan Street intersection when he went around a curve too fast, crossed the double yellow lines and hit an SUV driven by 41-year-old Kirsten Darling of Clarendon head-on. Both vehicles were able to be driven from the scene. Gough was cited for driving at an unsafe speed. The news leader of the Twin Tiers ... since 1947

Route 59 Near Dam Still Closed

Route 59 in Warren County will be closed for several more hours following a tanker rollover near Kinzua Dam this morning. The tanker was carrying asphalt, and crews are still working to clean it up. A detour using Route 321 is in place. PennDOT says Route 59 should re-open at about 8 o’clock tonight. The news leader of the Twin Tiers ... since 1947

Fatal Crash Near Tack's Inn

An Ohio man is dead following a crash with a tractor-trailer at 4 o’clock this morning on Route 219 about half a mile from Route 59. Police say 48-year-old David Scott of Jewett, Ohio, was traveling south when his car crossed the center line and hit a tractor-trailer driven by 52-year-old Denver Wellman of New Bremen, Ohio. McKean County Coroner Mike Cahill pronounced Scott dead at the scene. Scott’s passenger, 37-year-old Darnell Coram, also of Jewett, was flown to UPMC Hamot, where he is being treated for moderate injuries. Wellman was not hurt. The road was closed for about 4 ½ hours. Lane Restriction on Route 59

Route 59 is down to a single lane with a 10-foot lane restriction at the intersection with Keck Street in Mead Township, Warren County. Road crews are working on a scheduled slide repair. Traffic is being controlled by portable traffic signals. The road is expected to re-open by 4 p.m. on July 26. The news leader of the Twin Tiers ... since 1947

Route 59 Work Set to Start Monday

Work to repair an earth slide and prevent future slides along Route 59 near Warren is scheduled to start Monday, weather permitting. Traffic will be restricted to one-lane. At first it will be controlled by flaggers but, as work progresses, temporary traffic signals will be used. Two-way traffic is expected to be restored by August 28. The project is scheduled for completion by May 1, 2014. The work includes building a 160-foot retaining wall, and a 135-foot slope wall along the section of Route 59 about 2 miles from the intersection with Route 6. Work in the 1,200-foot-long project area will also include road replacement, paved shoulders, improved drainage and updated guiderails and pavement markers. Route 59 Paving Starts Thursday

A project to design and build a retaining wall on Route 59 in McKean and Warren counties will start in the spring. But, pavement patching work will start tomorrow (November 1) and will last for about a week, weather permitting. The project will go from about 2 miles east of the intersection with Route 6 in Warren County to 10.6 miles west of the McKean/Warren County line. Swank Construction of New Kensington was awarded the $1 million project. The costs will be paid entirely by federal money. Traffic will be controlled by flaggers during the pavement patching, and a 9-foot vehicle width restriction will be in place.
