School Bus Windows Shot

Windows from a number of school buses were shot and cracked over the weekend in Wetmore Township. Police say the incident happened between 4 o’clock Friday afternoon and 5:30 Sunday afternoon while they were parked at 39 Old Smethport Road. Bridge Work Starts Monday

Work to replace the Wetmore Road Bridge will start on Monday. The bridge that spans Two Mile Run in Hamilton Township, about five miles west of Kane, will be replaced with a box culvert. PennDOT’s official detour will direct motorists to use Route 6, and they go back to Wetmore Road. Work is expected to last until mid-August, but PennDOT says the bridge and road will be re-opened earlier if progress allows. The news leader of the Twin Tiers ... since 1947

Kane-Area Joy Ride Leads to Charges

State police saw a boy lying on his stomach on top of a speeding Jeep Cherokee, holding onto the luggage rack bars, and now the girl who was driving the Jeep is facing charges. Troopers say the incident happened at 6:30 Sunday morning on West Wind Road in Wetmore Township. The 18-year-old James City girl was driving one-handed – because she had a can of Bud Light in her other hand. After police stopped her, she was taken to Kane Community Hospital for blood tests. Mosquito Spraying in Eldred, Kane Areas

The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will apply treatments the evenings of Tuesday, June 17 in Eldred Borough and Eldred Township and Wednesday, June 18 in Eldred and Kane boroughs, and Eldred and Wetmore townships to control adult mosquito populations. The treatments will be administered by truck and ATV-mounted spray equipment to spray open spaces in residential and recreational areas. The equipment dispenses Biomist 3+15 applied at a rate of 0.75 ounces per acre. These products are designed to provide quick, effective control of adult mosquito populations. The application materials have a very low toxicity profile to mammals and are safe for the environment. Certain mosquito species carry the West Nile Virus, which can cause humans to contract West Nile Encephalitis, an infection that can result in an inflammation of the brain.
