House Passes Modernization of
Environmental Clean Up Law

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson, PA-5, today voted to support H.R. 2279, the Reducing Excessive Deadline Obligations Act, which passed the House by a vote of 225 to 188. The legislation, composed of three separate bills, seeks to modernize existing federal law and increase the role of the states in environmental cleanups under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA). “Passage of H.R. 2279 will protect businesses and local municipalities from expensive and duplicative federal hazardous substance cleanup requirements, which stands to help the 17 Superfund sites in Pennsylvania’s 5th Congressional District,” stated Rep. Thompson. “Additionally, these reforms will prevent EPA regulations, which the agency admits are overly burdensome and costly, from preempting state requirements pertaining to hazardous substances.” Included in the Reducing Excessive Deadline Obligations Act: · H.R. 2279, which pr...

Thompson Hails Senate Vote to Repeal
1099 IRS Reporting Requirement

Image
Washington, D.C. – Representative Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson today issued the following statement upon Senate passage of H.R. 4, a measure repealing the authority of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to require that businesses report every expense they incur over $600. The 1099 reporting requirement was enacted as part the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), the health care reform law originally passed in March of 2009 – and commonly referred to as Obamacare. The measure passed the Senate today with a bipartisan vote of 87 to 12. “Today’s vote to repeal the 1099 IRS reporting requirement is a major victory for small businesses and job creators in the Commonwealth and across the country. The Senate made the right choice in passing this bipartisan, common sense reform, which I and so many others in the House have been working on over the last year. President Obama should promptly sign this repeal into law to avoid death by a 1000 paper cuts for Pennsylvania’s small business...

Thompson Votes to Halt 1099
Small Business Reporting Requirement

Image
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Representative Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson, R-Howard an original cosponsor of H.R. 4, a measure repealing the authority of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to require that businesses report every expense they incur over $600, voted in favor of the bill earlier today. Passage of H.R. 4, which gained unanimous support from House Republicans and 76 Democrats, comes as federal courts continue to challenge the new law, with most recently a U.S. District Court ruling the health care law unconstitutional. Thompson issued the following statement after final passage: “Many of my initial concerns are now becoming a reality as this law has caused great uncertainty for businesses. The 1099 requirement would be death by a 1000 paper cuts for Pennsylvania’s small businesses. Any typical small business in a given year may have hundreds of vendors and be faced with thousands of transactions, and these burdensome regulations hamper job growth and undermine our path to economic recover...

Thompson Criticizes Cap & Trade

U.S. Representative Glenn `GT’ Thompson on Tuesday joined his colleagues in the American Energy Solutions Group in a public summit to oppose what he called "the Democrat’s misguided national energy tax," called Cap and Trade. “The truth behind the cap and tax plan is that it will lead to more taxes, fewer jobs, and more government intrusion,” said Thompson. “It won’t just raise the price of gas at the pumps and increase our home heating and cooling bills—but it will increase the cost of every product and service on which we rely.” Testifying at the summit, Dr. Gabriel Calzada Alvarez of King Juan Carlos University in Madrid, Spain, denied that green jobs in his country had been a success story as President Obama has suggested. Calzada said that 2.2 jobs were lost for every one green job created. The price of energy in his country has gone up 31 percent and the system has been unreliable with blackouts leading some producers to move their plants to other countries. Spain’...
