But the new facility will also  host  an abundance of artwork, making it both a creation of Pittsburgh culture and a curator of that culture moving forward. For Rachel Rearick, arts and culture manager at Pittsburgh International Airport, that role is critical for the region’s burgeoning local arts community. “We have a reputation as a growing technology hub, but we’re still making things,” she said. “Craft is having this renaissance, not just nationally, but globally.” Rearick says work produced by local artists in a variety of media is another way of telling the story and identity of Pittsburgh. Headed to Pittsburgh History Center

One of the Zippo/Case Museum’s most historically significant pieces– a lighter that was hand engraved on a landing craft en route to the D-Day invasion – is currently on loan, along with several other WWII-era artifacts from the Zippo and Case archives, to the Senator John Heinz History Center in Pittsburgh for a special exhibit opening Saturday, April 25, 2015. The Zippo/Case Museum pieces will be featured in the upcoming “We Can Do It! WWII” exhibit, which explores how Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania affected the home front and battlefield during WWII. “We’re honored to be able to share so many of our important historical pieces with the Heinz History Center,” said Pat Grandy, Zippo Corporate Media and Communications Manager. “Zippo and Case’s reputation for dependable products was cemented by our performance during WWII. SNO Contributes to Project Linus

Nursing students from the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford took time off from their nursing studies this week to make fleece blankets for Project Linus, a non-profit organization that delivers blankets to children in need. The Student Nurse Organization held a fall fundraiser to purchase materials for 22 blankets, which will be sent to seriously ill children at Pittsburgh Children’s hospital. Fatal Crash in Elk County

A man is dead following a one-car crash Sunday morning in Elk County. A passenger 44-year-old Daniel McGinnis of Pittsburgh, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say 22-year-old Michael McGinnis, also of Pittsburgh was driving on Portland Mills Road, just west of Route 949 – when his car went out of control, left the road, went over an embankment, then flew through the air before hitting several trees and coming to rest on its roof. Michael McGinnis was taken to Penn Highlands Elk for a blood test to see if he was driving under the influence. Another passenger, 44-year-old Sean Collins of Cranberry Township was taken to Penn Highlands Elk for treatment of major injuries. A third passenger, 23-year-old Benjamin Nagy of Pittsburgh wasn’t hurt. McGinnis was cited for driving too fast for conditions. The news leader of the Twin Tiers ... since 1947
