Bradford Landmark Society photo Calling all armchair historians! The 2020 edition of Baily’s Beads, the award-winning literary magazine created by University of Pittsburgh Bradford students, is seeking submissions for a writing contest. Editor Taylor Tarahteeff, an interdisciplinary arts major from Bradford, selected the theme of “Past, Present, and Future” for the 2020 issue and hopes to represent the rich local history of McKean County. “Bradford is a city built on a complex and fantastic heritage! Everyone you meet has a story to tell about the glitz and glamor of this bustling oil town,” Tarahteeff said. “We wanted to recognize the writers in our community and represent the pride and legacy of the area.” The guidelines for the contest are as follows: Create a piece of prose, poetry or artwork in any genre, focusing on McKean county history. The annual Crook Farm Country Fair is being held Saturday and Sunday at the historic Crook Farm on Seaward Avenue. 100.1 The Hero's Igor will be broadcasting live at Crook Farm from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday. Organizers are bringing back the popular Sunday breakfast this year. It will start at 9:30 a.m. Only 100 tickets are available. By Kimberly Marcott Weinberg Assistant Director of Communications and Marketing The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford will celebrate the campus’s history as Bradford’s original airport as part of celebrations for its 50th anniversary. Today’s Pitt-Bradford is located on a tract of land that served as Harri Emery Airport from the 1920s until the Bradford Regional Airport was constructed in the early 1950s. Pitt-Bradford retiree and local historian Linda Delaney has researched and curated an exhibit with the help of Bruce and Beverly Perry and Bernie Picklo. The exhibit will open Tuesday as part of Founders’ Day events planned at Pitt-Bradford for its 50th anniversary and remain on display in the KOA Gallery in Blaisdell Hall through Oct. 6. The gallery is open from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday. The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford will present a “Bits of Bygone Bradford” lecture series in February and March. The series of historical lectures was developed by the Bradford Landmark Society for the Pitt-Bradford Division of Continuing Education and Regional Development. Sessions are from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursdays Feb. 16 through March 22. The cost for the lectures is $15 per class or $75 for all six. Classes take place in Room 200 of the Seneca Building at 2 Main St. in Bradford. The first week’s topic is “Bootleggers, Bullets and Blood” about the 1920s moonshine feud between Olean, N.Y., and Bradford. On Feb. 23, the subject is “Build a Better Bradford with Bricks.” At one time, Bradford had five brick plants manufacturing bricks that were used all over the east coast. Participants will learn the story of the brick works, the significance of the Italian immigration to the area and the history behind the “Bradford Reds.” ...

The new book by Sally Ryan Costik, "Bootleggers Bullets and Blood," is an entertaining look at the gangsters in Bradford during Prohibition, detailing the murders, bootleggers, raids by Dry Agents, and more. It includes a list of those arrested for bootlegging in Bradford - maybe your grandparents were bootleggers!
