03/23/08 - Two Fatal Crashes on Saturday
A Brockway woman died in a two-vehicle accident Saturday on Route 219 in Elk County. Police say while a vehicle driven by 40-year-old Jacqueline Ehrgott of Brockway was making a left turn when it was hit by a truck driven by Michael Altemus of DuBois.
Ehrgott was pronounced dead at the scene by Elk County Coroner Lou Radkowski.
Atlemus was not hurt. A juvenile in his vehicle sustained a minor injury.

Another accident Saturday on State Route 219, this one killing two women in Snyder Township, Jefferson County. A car driven by 33 year old Eric Veltri of Brockway lost control and crossed the center line. He hit a car head on driven by 38 year old Delora Burrow-Bradish of Bradford. Her passengers, 29 year old Connie Bailey of Brockway and 39 year old Karen Peters of Newark, Deleware, were not wearing a seatbelt and were pronounced dead at the scene. Veltri who sustained moderate injuries was arrested for driving under the influence.


03/23/08 - Route 219 Extension in NYS DOT Plan
Extension of the Route 219 expressway and construction of a new Peace Bridge are included in the New York State Department of Transportation’s five-year capital plan. The state plan lists $90 million to cover the state’s share of the Peace Bridge project and $83 million for Route 219 construction to Snake Run Road in the Cattaraugus County Town of Ashford. Statewide, the plan would spend $25.7 billion on roads, bridges, railroads, airports, seaports and other infrastructure during the five-year period. That’s about 38 percent higher than the current $18 billion five-year plan, which runs through next year.

03/23/08 - Fund Set Up to Help Injured Soldier
A fund has been set up for a Western New York soldier injured in Iraq. 25- year old Sgt. James Hackemer lost both of his legs last week when a roadside bomb exploded near his armored vehicle. Donations to help his recovery can be sent to the Sgt. James Thomas Hackemer Benefit Fund at the Community Bank, 37 West Main Street, Gowanda, New York, 14070

03/23/08 - Fire Destroys Potter County Log Cabin
Fire destroyed a log cabin off of 11 Mile Road in Shinglehouse on Saturday. The fire had gone through the roof of the cabin by the time firefighters arrived. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Genesee, Bolivar and Portville fire departments assisted Shinglehouse firefighters at the scene.

03/23/08 - Otto-Eldred Graduate Helps Needy
Morgan Rhinehard, a 2006 graduate of Otto-Eldred High School, was one of 25 people from Susquehanna University who spent two weeks in Central America hand-delivering more than 35 thousand dollars worth of vitamins, school supplies, medical equipment and clothing. They also helped to build sidewalks and staff medical clinics. Morgan is the daughter of Jeff and Debbie Rhinehard.

The three women in the car hit by the DUI were sisters. Tragically their mother will have to attend funerals two days in a row.
