03/26/08 - Kartesz Hearing Set for Monday in Erie
A plea hearing for Frank Kartesz II, a key figure in the ongoing federal mortgage-fraud investigation in Erie, has been rescheduled. Kartesz, a former Bradford landlord, is now set to enter a plea before U.S. District Court Judge Sean J. McLaughlin on Monday at 1:30 p.m. at the federal courthouse in Erie. Kartesz's plea hearing had been set for Feb. 15, but it was abruptly canceled. The U.S. Attorney's Office in Erie on Jan. 31 charged Kartesz with one count each of mail fraud and criminal conspiracy to commit mail fraud, wire fraud and bank fraud. Kartesz waived his indictment in the mortgage-fraud case. The government alleges that Kartesz was part of a scheme in which he and others bought run-down houses and sold them at artificially inflated prices.

3/26/08 - Bisett Building Center to Celebrate 125 Years
Bisett Building Center will celebrate it’s 125th anniversary on Saturday May 17 from 8am – 4pm on Davis Street. 1490 WESB will be broadcasting live from 1-3pm that day.
There will be games, food, giveaways, special merchandise sales and t-shirts to the first 125 customers.

03/25/08 - Bradford City Council Meets
Bradford City Firefighters are applying for a federal grant to buy a new fire truck, and other equipment. Fire Chief Boo Coder 650 thousand dollars would also go toward training to bring firefighters to Firefighter I and Firefighter II levels, and toward other equipment.

Bradford City Police will be enrolling in the Department of Defense's Excess Federal Personal Property Program. Police Chief Mike Close explains that the department will be able to get surplus military equipment through the program, and the only cost will be for shipping.

Also Tuesday night, Main Street Manager Diane DeWalt announced that the Main Street Program has been accredited by the National Trust Main Street Center. Downtown Bradford has earned this national status for the past 5 consecutive years.

City Council awarded a contract to Bob Cummins Construction to build four new homes in the Onofrio Street project. O-E-C-D Executive Director Sara Andrews says the homes have already been sold.

03/25/08 - FCI-McKean Inmate Deported to Mexico
A man serving time on a federal immigration conviction at FCI-McKean has been deported to his native Mexico after authorities learned he was wanted there for murder. Gregorio Delgado-Munoz had been serving a 26-month sentence at FCI-McKean after being convicted last year for illegal re-entry after deportation under an alias. Federal immigration officials said today they recently learned that Interpol had an arrest warrant for Delgado-Munoz in connection with a slaying in Mexico. He was flown to Laredo, Texas, where he was turned over to Mexican authorities.

03/25/08 - UPB's Gaskew Receives Fellowship
Dr. Tony Gaskew, assistant professor of criminal justice at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, has been awarded an academic fellowship from the Foundation for Defense of Democracies to spend 10 days in Israel studying terrorism-related issues. Gaskew, who also is coordinator of criminal forensics studies, was one of about 25 professors from colleges and universities throughout the United States to be chosen for the program. The professors were chosen for the program based on their academic/professional credentials and their expertise on terrorism-related issues. Gaskew and the other professors will be in Israel studying at Tel Aviv University from June 9 to 20. He and the others will sit in on lectures by academics, military and intelligence officials and diplomats from Israel, Jordan, India, Turkey and the United States. They will also visit police, customs and immigration facilities, military bases and border zones to learn the practical side of deterring and defeating terrorism.
