Proposed New Law Would Stop
Tobacco Sales in Some Stores

A bill with strong support in the New York Legislature would ban cigarette sales in drug stores, supermarkets and big box stores like Wal-Mart that have pharmacies.

The bill is in committee this week and could be voted into law this session.

A spokesman for the parent company of Phillip Morris says the bill unfairly targets tobacco products.

A spokesman for the Center for a Tobacco Free New York says the law would separate the sale of healthy items from tobacco, and that some supermarkets are voluntarily ending cigarette sales.
