National Night Out Tonight

Chief Michael Close, Lisa Campogiani and the Bradford National Night Out Committee members encourage residents to spend the evening of August 4, 2009 out and about with your fellow neighbors in recognition of the 26th annual National Night Out.

Sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW), National Night Out (NNO) was conceived with the aim of empowering community residents, and as a unique tool against criminal and drug activity. Along with traditional displays of outdoor lights and front porch vigils celebrations of National Night Out also features activities such as block parties, cookouts, parades, flashlight walks, exhibits, contests, youth programs and visits from local police departments. Goals of National Night Out include creating a heightened awareness of crime and drug prevention efforts, as well strengthening neighborhood spirit.

NNO 2008 involved 37 million people in 15,449 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities, and military bases worldwide. National Night Out 2009 is expected to be the largest ever. NNO is sponsored by NATW in partnership with Target.

This year’s Bradford celebration of National Night Out includes a variety of special citywide and neighborhood events. Local law enforcement & a safety fair will be located at Old City Hall Parking lot. The DARE car and ERT vehicle will be present along with Safe Kids McKean. The First United Methodist Church will be holding a kids carnival on Chamber Street from 5-9PM with special events sponsored by the YMCA of Bradford from 5:30-7:30PM. Grace Lutheran will be hosting a band showcase from 6-9PM featuring: Dead Men Don’t Talk, Entropy’s End, Weight of the World, and Change of Ideas. In the adjoining parking lot The Bradford Area Chamber of Commerce, First Night Bradford, and the Brothers of Sigma Lambda Chi will be providing popcorn, balloons and hosting a sidewalk chalk art event for kids 6th grade and younger from 5-7PM. Callahan Park will hold a family swim between 6:30 and 8:30PM. All children must be accompanied by an adult to participate in this event. A downtown pet parade will be take place on Main Street. Anyone wishing to participate should report to National City parking lot at 7PM. J & K Pets will be available as well as information on pet and pedestrian safety.

A Taste of Bradford will take place at Veteran’s Square between 5 and 8PM. Local restaurants will have food available and WESB will be on location for a live remote. The ATA trolley will be providing transportation between all events from 5-9PM.

Other registered celebrations include a porch light and red, white and blue display at homes on School Street, 2nd Ward will have basketball, refreshments, and a neighborhood stroll from 5-6:30PM, 5th Ward will host a gathering at the neighborhood park, with a Hula Hoop contest, basketball, and refreshments between 5 and 6:30PM. “This year’s event is aimed at reaching out to the entire Bradford community in an effort to strengthen everyone’s sense of community while providing valuable safety information.
