OSRAM Sylvania Gets ARRA Money

Elk County's unemployment figures may look a tiny bit better soon thanks in part to federal stimulus money.

OSRAM Sylvania is receiving $116,865 in grant money to launch its new candle-shaped Light Emitting Diode Lamp. The funding will be used to procure mold tooling, build an airtight assembly room and necessary electrostatic workstations to assemble this product in Pennsylvania.

The LED lamps are expected to save electricity and natural gas and create 60 permanent full-time jobs. Seven full-time jobs will also be retained.

Elk County's unemployment rate is 14.4 percent.

In announcing the $20.7 million in grants going across the state, Governor Ed Rendell said the projects will generate and conserve enough energy to power more than 26,000 homes, reducing carbon emissions equivalent to removing more than 17,000 cars from state roads.
