A special prosecutor has been appointed to investigate circumstances at the Cattaraugus County Sheriff's Office since the death of Sheriff Dennis John last month.
District Attorney Ed Sharkey says Wyoming County District Attorney Gerald Stout will handle the investigation.
Sharkey says Stout will investigate things happening in the department, but not John's death itself.
Neither he, nor acting Sheriff Timothy Whticomb would elaborate further.
