Senator Gillibrand Calls for
Overhaul of Food Safety Laws

U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is calling for an overhaul of food safety laws, and plans to introduce a bill that would mandate E. coli inspections of all ground beef.

Currently, meat grinders aren't required to test their ingredients for the bacteria.

During a news conference on Sunday Gillbrand said the hundreds of recalls in recent months show that the system needs to be fixed.

She says educating the public would be part of her plan, and that would include posting notices in grocery store aisles when items are recalled.

Gillibrand sits on the agriculture committee, which is responsible for developing policies for food production and oversight.
