Speaker Series, Youth Programs at KOTS

The Ninth Annual Kinzua Outdoor and Travel Show, February 26th and 27th, offers a broad range of speakers and children’s programs with a wide variety of interests that appeal to all ages. The Show, held at the Bradford Mall, is scheduled for 4 pm to 9 pm Friday the 26th, and 10 am to 6 pm Saturday the 27th.

“The 2010 speaker series and youth activity lineup will compel you to attend the event,” stated John Sullivan, event chair. “It is impossible to select just one to attend in either our main speaker area or the youth activity area.”

The Speaker Series kicks off on Friday the 26th at 6:30 pm with Rick Esch and John Shinaberger of the Tuna Valley Trail Association to discuss Tuna Valley Trail Association: Past, Present, and Future. At 7:15 pm, Kirk Johnson of the Friends of Allegheny Wilderness – Warren will present Preserving Wilderness Areas in the Allegheny National Forest. Both programs appeal to all ages interested in exploring and protecting the abundant natural resources throughout the local region.

Saturday morning at 11 am, get ready to learn about the gobblers! Randy Opferbeck and Dick Duffy, members of the National Wild Turkey Federation, will share their expertise with attendees during Spring Turkey Hunting, Calling, and Safety. At 1 pm, the Speaker Series will move into your own backyard, when Bob Harris shares his tips for Gardening in Bradford. Bob, a certified Penn State Master Gardener, Groundskeeper at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, and host of “Around the Home”, a local gardening show on WESB, will discuss many techniques with those interested in learning more about successful gardening in Bradford’s specific climate.

At 2:30 pm, the topic will be Wild Game + Fire = Mouth-Watering Meals! John Ryan, who has many years of kitchen and campfire experience, including providing some of the tantalizing game meats for the First Presbyterian Church’s Sportsmen’s Dinner, will share tips for making wild game a delicious culinary treat. The Speaker Series will conclude at the 4 pm presentation by Susan Eger Godfrey on Winter Woods Walking, which will include information on snowshoeing and other means of traversing the woods in wintry conditions.

For youth at the Outdoor and Travel Show, an equally informative and enjoyable slate of activities is planned. The Programs begin with “Down the Drain,” presented by Sandy Thompson of the McKean County Conservation District. This program will educate children about litter and non-point source pollution, and how such pollution can be prevented to ensure clean water that support wildlife in the area. Each attendee will receive a white pine seedling to take home and plant. Throughout the rest of Friday evening, from 5:30 pm to 8 pm, LPX Gaming will provide multiple video gaming stations with a variety of sports and outdoor-themed video games appropriate for all ages. “Science in Motion has been our Friday evening program for several years and the loss of funding for this interesting and educational experience took that opportunity from our event also,” stated Diane Sheeley, executive director of the Bradford Area Chamber of Commerce. “We are fortunate both American Refining Group and the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford continued support for the youth programs and our efforts to find replacement activities for Friday evening.”

Saturday from 12 noon to 5 pm, employees from American Refining Group volunteer their time to present a variety of children’s activities and experiences, coordinated by Youth Program Committee Chair Helen Cummiskey. Topics addressed will include where oil is found, what alternative energy and conservation mean, and how oil is used every day. Participants will be able to make a “rig” to drill for oil, dig for dinosaurs, make pinwheels and hydro-power turbines, decorate windows with stained-glass paint, and more. Youth participating in activities during the weekend must be accompanied by an adult.

The Bradford Family YMCA and the Bradford Alliance Church have the inflatable slider obstacle course in their booth throughout the event.

Presented by the Bradford Area Chamber of Commerce, and sponsored by Charlie’s Cycle Center, Shults Toyota-Scion/Edmond Chevrolet, Z&M Ag and Turf, and the Zippo/Case Museum, the Ninth Annual Kinzua Outdoor and Travel Show celebrates the abundant outdoor beauty and recreational activities in the Pennsylvania Wilds and Twin Tiers Region. There is a nominal weekend admission fee for adults and children over 10 years of age. Children 10 and under are admitted free.
