Beacon Light Expansion Will
Promote Greater Access

The previously announced renovation and expansion of Beacon Light’s Bridgeport Academy in Port Allegany will improve access to services for those in the region, reported agency officers this week.

Through the addition of various community based programming, the site will operate as a “clinical home” from which students transitioning back into the community and local school districts will have the necessary supports to succeed. Currently, the Bridgeport Academy program is designed to meet the educational and treatment needs of school aged youth who, for a variety of reasons have had a lack of success in the general public school system. In the past, when students were discharged from Bridgeport Academy, they returned to their home school district with limited after care or follow up services including community based services, psychiatric follow-up, and/or therapy services.

Beacon Light’s intent is to evolve the current programming in Port Allegany into a comprehensive array of treatment modalities that will serve the total needs of the children and families served in the region. Through the addition of community based programming including outpatient services, Multi-Systemic Therapy (MST), Family Based Mental Health, and individual, group and family counseling; children and families will be more likely to successfully transition, not only back to their home school districts, but also home with their parents/guardians.

“We’re very excited at the opportunity this change presents for the residents of McKean and Potter counties.” Said Richard Seager, President/CEO of Beacon Light. “It’s often difficult to provide adequate services in rural parts of northwestern PA, but we’re committed to meeting the needs of our neighbors.”

Beacon Light announced its receipt of grant monies totaling more than $100,000 in December of 2009, thanks to the generosity of the Mee Foundation based in Binghamton, NY. Given the recent contractual agreement with the Port Allegany School District, Beacon Light will contribute additional monies to support the expansion of current facilities and services.

Beacon Light is a not-for-profit social service agency providing a complete continuum of care for children and families from across the Commonwealth. More information on their available programs can be found at www.beacon-light.org.
