Edwards: Celebrate Earth Day by
Cleaning Parks, Roads, Public Areas

Mayville: -- This Thursday, April 22nd is Earth Day 2010. Chautauqua County Executive Gregory J. Edwards said that this year marks the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day, and there are plenty of ways to celebrate.

"I encourage community and civic groups to participate in this day by cleaning parks, roadways and other public areas," Edwards said.

To encourage participation, now through May 8th, all user fees at the County Landfill and County Transfer Stations have been waived for civic and community groups, to encourage them to collect refuse and help keep Chautauqua County clean and green. Community and civic groups must notify the County Landfill of their organized clean-up activities one-week prior to the start of their activity in order to benefit from the waived fees. To contact the County Landfill, please call them at 985-4785.

Jamestown Community College will celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day during Earthfest, which will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 21 outside the Hamilton Collegiate Center on JCC’s Jamestown Campus. The event is sponsored each year by JCC’s Earth Awareness Club and the college program committee of the JCC Faculty Student Association. Admission to Earthfest is free, and the event is open to the public.

Saturday, April 24th, SUNY Fredonia will be hosting its Campus and Community Household Electronic Recycling Day at the Chautauqua County Fairgrounds on Central Avenue in Dunkirk from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, contact the SUNY Fredonia Office of Facilities Services at 673-3452. You can also visit www.fredonia.edu/gogreen, which offers information on SUNY Fredonia's "Earth Week 2010: Be the Change", going on now through April 25th.

"We have become more environmentally conscious, thanks in part to national awareness campaigns such as Earth Day," Edwards said. "We have done many things over the past several years to create a greener Chautauqua County. I am confident that the future of Chautauqua County will be greener, and I am excited about where we are heading."
