PA, NY Budgets Still in Limbo
New York State lawmakers say they have reached a deal to help close the state's $9.2 billion deficit, but Governor David Paterson says he plans to veto parts of it.
The plan adds an additional $500 million in spending beyond what Paterson had approved, and he says he’ll reject it unless the legislature finds ways to pay for it.
The governor also said the spending plan does not deal with the fact that the state is likely to receive $1 billion less in F-MAP spending than expected.
Paterson says he’ll hold lawmakers in Albany until they come up with a plan for the possible shortfall. New York’s budget was due April 1.
In Pennsylvania, budget negotiators worked through the weekend on a spending plan they hope to have in place by the beginning of the new fiscal year on Thursday.
A Senate Republican spokesman says it’s unlikely a deal will be reached by the deadline.
House and Senate leaders are expected to meet again today for more negotiations.
