Pitt-Bradford Names Geary as Executive Director of Division of Continuing Education and Regional Development

The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford has named Raymond R. Geary executive director of Pitt-Bradford’s Division of Continuing Education and Regional Development.

Geary comes to Pitt-Bradford from Elmira (N.Y.) College, where he was the dean of continuing education and graduate studies. He will begin his new position on Aug. 11 and will report to Pitt-Bradford’s President, Dr. Livingston Alexander. Geary will also serve as a member of the President’s Cabinet.

“Ray Geary impressed us immensely as he competed for this position as part of a national pool of applicants,” Alexander said. “He brings a wealth of knowledge to the position, as well as a proven track record of success at several institutions of higher education.”

Geary said, “I am excited to be joining the Pitt-Bradford team. I look forward to developing relationships, partnerships and collaborations in our community and the region and also strengthening the quality programs that already exist.”

In his new role, Geary will direct the Division of Continuing Education and Regional Development, which was formerly known as the Office of Outreach Services. Alexander commented on the change in the office’s name.

“Our intent in changing the name is to better reflect the mission of the division and the services provided by the staff.” Alexander said. “Residents in the region will come to regard Pitt-Bradford as the central location for personal and professional enrichment instruction, training and development opportunities for businesses and organizations, summer camps for children and teens, and access to regional and national conferences.”

In addition to connecting businesses with consultants and brokering training, the division works with Community Education Councils to bring credit and noncredit courses to St. Marys, Port Allegany, Warren and the University of Pittsburgh at Titusville.

Geary will also oversee the campus’s conference services and work to expand the conferences brought to campus.

Most recently, Geary served as dean at Elmira College for two years, where he managed all aspects of the college’s part-time undergraduate and graduate programs. Prior to his post at Elmira, he spent seven years at the College of the Redwoods in Eureka, Calif., where he served as acting vice president of the school’s Del Norte campus, was acting vice president of its Mendocino Coast campus, and was dean of community and economic development.

Geary has also held positions at Finger Lakes Community College in Canandaigua, N.Y., the Rochester Museum and Science Center, and the American Red Cross.

He served as chairman of the Rochester (N.Y.) Area Colleges Continuing Education Consortium; was a board member and served in various other capacities on the Continuing Education Association of New York; was a representative on the National Council for Continuing Education and Training; and was vice president of the California Community Colleges Association of Occupational Educators.

Geary has received several awards, including the James C. Hall Exemplary Program Award from the Continuing Education Association of New York, the National Council of Continuing Education and Training Exemplary Program Award; and the Economic Development Person of the Year award from the California Community Colleges Association of Community and Continuing Education.

Geary holds a master’s degree in adult education from Syracuse (N.Y.) University and a bachelor’s degree in anthropology from the State University of New York at Geneseo.
