Bradford Could be Ultimate Fishing Town

By SANDRA RHODES

Bradford can have a great fish tale to boast, but it needs your help to win.

Bradford has been nominated as the Ultimate Fishing Town USA by Linda Devlin, executive director of the Allegheny National Forest Visitors Bureau, the tourist promotion agency in McKean County. The winning town will receive a $25,000 community donation.

Devlin said she nominated Bradford because of the outdoor recreation possibilities that are prevalent in this area.

“Bradford is a place where you can wear fishing waders into a bar and not call attention to yourself,” she wrote in her nomination. “Bradford embraces its link to the outdoors.”

Devlin cited the “Kinzua Fly Fishing School” that is held each May at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford, a group of fishermen that meet once a week at the Historic Crook Farm to tie flies and The Lodge at Glendorn, an ORVIS-endorsed fly-fishing lodge.

“It seems only natural that Bradford be recognized for its tie with fishing,” she said. “It’s part of what lures people to this area.”

The nomination period runs until April 8. This is the time when people can submit their own nomination, including photos and videos, supporting the initial nomination. The more nominations a town receives, the likelier it is to get more votes and advance to the next round. To submit your nomination, including photos and video, log on to http://www.wfnfishingtown.com/. Find Devlin’s nomination for Bradford, Pa. Click “Add to Nomination” and tell your own fish story as to why Bradford is the ultimate fish town.

Should Bradford win, the money would benefit the Tuna Valley Trail Association to encourage the development and access to trails, trail towns and local recreation destinations in this region.

“Some of the trails in the TVTA system surround the Marilla Reservoir, one of the most popular fishing spots in the region,” she said. “Fishing and trails go hand-in-hand here. We are a premier outdoor recreation destination for those who want to forge their own trail, especially if that trail is a fishing stream.”

From April 12 until May 3, the first round of voting will take place. The second round of voting will be held from May 10 to May 31. The winner will be announced on June 6. The public voting is the most important step in Bradford winning, so please click on to www.wfnfishingtown.com
to place your vote starting April 12.

Towns in Pennsylvania will vie against Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, New York and District of Columbia.
