Derby Chapeau Tea is Sunday

By SANDRA RHODES
Hold onto your hat – and take it with you to the Derby Chapeau Tea.

The Derby Chapeau Tea is one facet of a Triple Crown of events that benefit the Bradford Area Public Library Endowment Fund.

The tea will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 27, at the Bradford Area Public Library. Those interested are invited to take part in an elegant afternoon of delicious cuisine, beautiful piano music plus much more.

Co-chairwoman Fran Runyan explained the tea, which will include tea sandwiches and desserts, will be catered by Metz Catering from the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. Her fellow co-chairwoman, Lee Ann Doynow, will provide homemade petit fours. Pianists for the afternoon will be Shelley Wright and Jean Gross.

“It’s fun to get in the spirit of things,” Runyan said. “The elegance of a tea party … it’s really a wonderful way to spend an afternoon.”

Selected ladies will pour the tea at two separate stations. Runyan said, “In days of old, it was really an honor to be asked to pour tea.” That sentiment is being renewed for this event.

Those attending are encouraged to wear hats, given it’s the Derby “Chapeau” Tea, but headwear is not mandatory.

The tea is also open for anyone who would enjoy such an event. “Everyone is definitely welcome,” Runyan said. “There’s no dress code” but people are encouraged to dress like they would at a tea event.

“It spans the generations,” she said, adding men and younger ones who would enjoy the event should not hesitate in coming.

Runyan said that events like these are important to raise money for the Library Endowment Fund, but also to raise awareness about the library itself.

“A community really needs a library,” she said. “It functions on so many different levels. It’s vital for the community.”

Runyan cited the library is used as a reference area, provides computers for the community and also hosts a variety of groups and classes.

“So many events from One Book Bradford to the Literary Club … different groups like boat and motorcycle safety (classes).

“It is a treasure … the hub of a community.”

And at a time when funding has been cut and may be cut further, it is vital that money comes from other sources to help the library, “an important facet of a thriving community.”

In addition to the tea, sandwiches and desserts, Mary Jane Hand from Grandma’s House Teas & Gifts will be on hand with items from her store for sale. There will also be several raffle items, including two tickets to the Derby Gala event. Other items include donations from Miss Maggies, Serendipity of Main Street and Tin Ceiling.

Tickets are $15 a piece and are available at Grandma's House Teas & Gifts, The Tin Ceiling Gift Shop, Graham's Florist & the Bradford Public Library. Tickets are limited to 100.

The remaining events of the Triple Crown are the Kids Derby Day, set for April 16, and the Derby Gala, set for May 7.
